Después de algunos meses de no postear nada, quiero compartirles dos discos de una genial banda argentina llamada Reminder. De seguro algunos ya la escucharon. Hace bastante tiempo se posteó una pequeña entrevista a la banda en este blog. Buena banda youth crew. Escuchen y ojala que les guste.

Family es sin duda una de las mejores bandas straight edge de Brasil. Recuerdo que la primera vez que la escuché fue gracias a un buen amigo que me grabó un cassette con bandas hardcore brasileñas, en un tiempo en el que la escena en guate apenas empezaba; lo mas curioso es que con el tiempo fui descubriendo que bandas eran las que estaban grabadas ahi, porque no tenía ni siquiera los nombres de las bandas, solo decía Curitiba-Sao Paulo Hardcore. Lastimosamente lo que esta en ese cassette no lo he encontrado en ningún lado y no lo puedo compartir.

Lo que si puedo compartir esta vez es este discazo, realmente una joya entre las joyas del straight edge de este continente, y podría decir del mundo. Este es de esos discos que son perfectos, de principio a fin es un homenaje al sXe hardcore. La voz es de las mejores que he escuchado, y tocan a la velocidad perfecta, con breakdowns increíbles, es un youth crew como ningún otro. Sin duda es de mis bandas favoritas.

Y por si fuera poco hacen un cover de Straight Edge Revenge de Project X. A mi gusto es el mejor cover de esa canción que he escuchado.

1. When was the band started (which year, and if known, month)?
The band was started in 2001.

2. Where is the band from?

Guatemala City, Guatemala

3. How did the band come about? Who was involved (full names if possible, instruments they played, any other bands the members have been/are involved in)?

Around the year 2001, late 2000 perhaps, some of us kids who were involved in the hardcore punk scene (which had perhaps almost 2 years of existence by the time) were pretty much into straight edge hardcore, we listened to the youth crew bands of North and South America and European bands as well. As a result of this four kids decided to start a straight edge band and named it Sangre Joven (Young Blood). This band was born in a time where there were other hardcore bands like Fuerza X and Bombardero where around as well, and also skateboarding was what almost everybody involved in hardcore punk was into. Since straight edge hardcore was starting to have a serious meaning to many of us the band was just perfect and many identified with it because it kind of brought the youth crew sound into the scene.

At first Sangre Joven was a four piece band. The lineup was:

- Diego Archila on vocals (who was also drumming for Fuerza X, another hardcore band which was playing at the time, and previously played drums in a band called Skunx; he then played in Lurch, Mascarita Sagrada, Nota Suicida, Eterna Convicción, Crucial and Siempre Adelante; he currently plays in a hardcore band from Barcelona called The Few).

- Andrés Orellana played guitar (he formerly sang in Fuerza X, and after Sangre Joven he did vocals for Rivalidad).

- Gustavo played bass (shit can´t remember his last name; he was in Mascarita Sagrada as well).

- Fernando Sagastume played drums (he was also involved in bands such as Diferente Expectativa, and later in Nota Suicida, Crucial and Rivalidad; he currently plays in a band called Volver).

A short time later the lineup changed and Diego left the band to focus more on his other band Fuerza X, or that´s what I remember. So Andrés moved to the singing duties, and Fernando Matzdorff (who plays now in a band called Xbalanque or something like that, I really don´t know what type of music they play) joined in on guitar. I think this new lineup lasted for about a year, so it was:

Andrés on vocals, Gustavo on bass, Fernando M. on guitar and Fernando S. on drums.

After that, in late 2002 or early 2003, I was asked to joined in on second guitar and I agreed without any question, so the band became a five piece. Now the lineup was:

- Andrés on vocals

- Gustavo on bass

- Fernando M. on guitar

- Fernando S. on drums

- Me, Jorge Garcia on guitar (I also played for Bombardero and then on Fuerza X, Diferente Expectativa, Eterna Conviccion and Crucial, sometime later I played for Rivalidad as well; right now I´m starting a straight edge band with some friends).

It remained like this for sometime. After this Fernando Matzdorff left the band and I took fully on the guitar duties. We needed a bassist and that´s how Luis Otzoy (he played in G.I. Jokes, later on Rivalidad, and currently on Venganza and Volver) joined in and we also had Alejandro Ful (no bands before or after that I can remember) on second guitar by this time. But sometime later Alejandro left the band, and Sangre Joven went back to be a four piece. This lineup (Andrés on vocals, Fernando Sagastume on drums, Luis Otzoy on bass, Jorge Garcia on guitar) was the one which played all the way to the last show.

4. Where did the band name come from? What is the meaning behind the name of the band?

This is a tough one. I was not the one who named the band, but I´m guessing it was maybe because the first lineup was pretty young, they all were 17 years old, so they had a young blood, it was a young blood in the scene as well, maybe that´s where the name of the band came from (Sangre Joven = Young Blood).

And as I said, the name might have meant the new blood coming into the scene, a young blood which had something to say and had a straight edge message that needed to be delivered, mostly since it was a transitional time when this band started because other bands were changing or calling it quits.

5. How would the band describe its sound? And did the sound of the band develop through time? If so, in what direction?

The sound was fully old school straight edge hardcore, in the vein of the classic and new youth crew bands. The sound didn´t changed or developed so much, there were just some new small things added to the songs musically, but we basically remained the same.

6. What was the main focus in the lyrics? Did this develop over time?
Songs dealt mostly with unity in the scene, people dropping out of the scene, friendship, straight edge of course, commitment, positivity, things that everyone could relate to at the time. Lyrics didn´t develop that much.

7. When and where was the first show of the band? Any special memories?
I´m not an original member, and I hope I´m accurate in this one. Sangre Joven´s first show was in 2001. It was in a small venue, which was kind of like a small restaurant or bar, I guess it was called La Tiendita (The Small Store), but I may be wrong, although I´m pretty sure this was the place where the show took place. I remember that the place where the bands played was all the way in the back. Some other bands played the show, I guess maybe Fuerza X, but I can´t remember it well. There was a billiards place nearby. I just remember we were all very young, some kids even younger than me, it was pretty fun. So few of us still remain from those days.

8. What were the most important line-up changes of the band? Why did these happen and when did these (approximately) happen?

I guess the first lineup change wasn´t that important since the band had just some months of existence. This first change was around the same year the band formed, 2001. The replacement was found quite quick and the changes weren´t that drastic. I´m pretty sure that Diego Archila left the band to focus a lot more on Fuerza X which was his other band, which I was a part of too, and we were close to make our first tour in the US, so I guess that was part of the reason. I hope my memory is accurate as possible about this events.

One of the changes that struck some of the members of the band, or at least struck me very much was when Gustavo left and then when Alejandro left as well. Maybe the effect for the band wasn´t that big because replacements and reorders in the lineup came fast and the new kids and positions in the band were a great fit. The thing is that this guys were one of the greatest persons I have ever met. When Gustavo left I felt like shit for some time because he was so committed with straight edge and hardcore, same thing as with Alejandro, so it was more a tough emotional time when they left and broke edge. It really sucked.

The next lineup change that I think was most important was when Fernando Matzdorff left. I don´t know, he was a skilled guitarist and he introduced a lot of nice things into the music, although it was Andres the one who came up with almost all the music. But still the sound was already estabilished, so the importance of this change wasn´t that big anyway, the real bad thing is that we never got to see him again as much as we did, he was a nice guy. Me and some friends bumped into him some time ago and it was great that he was pretty happy to see us again. I really don´t remember why he left, I guess maybe he was focusing on something else besides the band because I remember he didn´t come to play some shows, or he will show up, play and leave, he didn´t hung around or stayed to catch the other bands, it was kind of a weird situation.

But anyway, the last lineup was also great, we all felt so alive everytime we played, I think I speak for all of the lineup members. So maybe the changes had to happen, it´s hard for things to stay the same.

This demo was done fully DIY and was released in late 2003 or early 2004. Since it was DIY no record label was involved. The lineup was: Andrés Orellana – vocals, Fernando Matzdorff – guitar, Gustavo Figueroa – bass, Jorge Garcia – guitar, Fernando Sagastume – drums. Recording date: 7 – 11 november 2003. I can´t remember the name of the studio or the guy who recorded it and mixed it. For some reason which doesn´t come to mind I wasn´t able to record my guitar parts, so the guitar recordings were fully done by Fernando M.

This record has the exact same tracks as those from the 2003 demo, but was released sometime around 2004 if I´m correct. The label which did the release is Tomorrow Records (I´m pretty sure it´s a label from Peru); the guy who ran it got in contact with Andres and was nice enough to put it out, which was great because that way we could have a better chance for more kids in other countries which seemed hard to reach to listen to the band. The tracks weren´t re-recorded, changed or mastered, they were, as I pointed out, the same tracks from the 2003 demo but Tomorrow Records released them as a CD/EP sort of thing. Although the songs were recorded by the past lineup, this had changed by the time and Sangre Joven was: Andres – vocals, Jorge Garcia – guitar, Luis Otzoy – bass, Fernando Sagastume – drums.

I´m not sure whatever happened to Tomorrow Records, I have no idea if the label is still around, but if anyone wants to try here´s the website and e-mail which appear on the CD booklet (or just google it and maybe it´s still out there):

This was a split CD released in the year 2003, sometime around December of that year, and it was somewhat of a support for the tour the bands from Guatemala listed did in December of that same year. The release was actually made by two Mexican labels, XWARRIORMEX Records and Decision Personal Records.

There were some things about the Guatemalan bands of the split that I think are worth mentioning. All of them toured Mexico in 2003, and the bands shared many of the members. Another curious fact is that the Nota Suicida tracks, as far as remember, only appeared in this split, they were never released on any other demo or ep of any sort. The Eterna Conviccion tracks were also released as a demo in 2003 by the local, but shortlasting label, x502x Records.

Another curious thing is that the two Sangre Joven tracks only appeared on this comp, they are nowhere else to be found but here, and one of them, Falsa Amistad, was never again played at shows, I don´t know why, the song was good, but maybe it was a mutual band decision to just kill the song forever. This two songs were recorded long before the 2003 demo, actually this is a totally different recording, can´t remember where or when this songs were recorded, perhaps 2002, I was not a member of the band by the time so I can´t be totally accurate about it. From the two tracks only Tolerancia was re-recorded and included in the releases that came later. The lineup at the time of the recording of these two tracks (maybe 2002 as I pointed out) must have been: Andres – vocals, Fernando M. – guitar, Fernando S. – drums, Gustavo – bass. In the split booklet the lineup appeared as: Andres – vocals, Fernando M. – guitar, Jorge – guitar, Gustavo – bass, Fernando S. – drums. And just to make matters a bit more complicated, the year the split came out, Gustavo had already left the band, so the lineup by the time, and for the Mexican 2003 tour as well, was the same five piece, but Alejandro had replaced Gustavo on bass.

This comp was released, as far as I´m concerned, by a bunch of labels. I don´t remember which labels they were or the year of release, sorry! There´s one Sangre Joven track in this comp, I´m pretty sure it was taken out of the 2003 demo. There´s also a song from another band from Guatemala called Eterna Conviccion, which I played bass for and were nice friends with Sangre Joven as well.

10. Did the band any major tours? If yes, where and when? Any special stories to share about these tours?

The band used to go several times to El Salvador, more specifically to San Salvador which is just about 3 and a half hours away. The kids and hardcore bands over there used to invite us all the time to play shows. The place has a very hot weather, almost like a beach. We played with lots of bands there, some of the ones I remember are Firme Decision, Inhumanoiz, Perseverancia. Shows used to be really fun. At first there were not that much people at shows, but as years went by a lot more kids showed up. There´s lots of memories about those times. The “official” or regular place to go before or after the shows was any place we could eat pupusas (which is one of the most, or maybe the most, famous of El Salvador´s national foods). We once went to this place called Pupusodromo, which was like a big kind of park which had lots of different locals which sold pupusas and it was all the way on the top of a mountain. There was a legend which was told that an old big house, which actually covered a whole block, was haunted. So one night after the show this kids drove us there to check out the place. It was creepy, it had an old fence surrounding it, seemed like the grass haven´t been cut in years, and the sorroundings were very dark, but we saw nothing, although the place was truly scary. I also remember that at this one show I got a bloody nose, but that´s something that might happen when you get in a pit. And pits in El Salvador used to be very tough, lots of kicks and arms flying around. It was a nice place to go, we made lots of friends, some of which we still see from time to time when we go there or they come here. At this one show a big fight broke outside of the place where we played at, I didn´t saw much of it but afterwards we were told that even knives were pulled out. The police were arriving and we just jumped in the car and left to avoid trouble, mostly because we were foreigners. We also had a car crash just some kilometers away from El Salvador, it was a hard crash, but we were ok; but the car was in kind of a bad shape, luckily it could still be driven and we had to turn back home, it really sucked, especially since it was the other dumbass driver´s fault but he never wanted to accept his mistake, so my friend who was driving had to pay the full repair. Also there was a pretty shitty night we spent over there, well not me but some of my friends. The thing is that a friend over in El Salvador was nice enough to let us sleep on a somewhat empty apartment of his, but since there were no beds some of us slept on this thick blankets, but others had to sleep in between a couch and some chairs, they had one of the worst sleeps of their lives, and with that hot weather it was already hard to fall asleep. The next day we went to the beach I guess. I spent one of my birthdays in El Salvador since we went there to play a show.

Sangre Joven also toured Costa Rica once, I guess it was in December 2004. Some flew over there, some took a long bus trip. I did the bus trip with another friend (Julio Baeza, Venganza´s guitarist). It was like an 18 hour trip over there. I remember we got he chance to rehearse before the show at this kind of recording studio/rehearsal spot which was located near some old train tracks. It was a nice show, lots of people showed up. Bands from El Salvador also played there, and of course bands from Costa Rica also played. A band from Panama called Gran Malota was also on the bill, they were this big guys, kind of intimidating, but they were nice guys. We had records and shirts for sale that day. We went to eat pizza one night, it was this Italian place, which I remember had lots of Juventus posters and memorabilia on the walls, the woman who owned the place was hot. Actually most women over in Costa Rica were kind of pretty and attractive. We had a walk downtown one afternoon, it was a very cool place to be, lots of people walking by. We also went to these awesome vegetarian restaurant, the cool thing was that the food wasn´t so expensive and it was damn good. One of the guys who had us stay at his house took us to this club to take a dive at the pool and have a fun time, then we ate something and head back to sleep. We spent some days in Costa Rica actually. It was pretty fun. We also played a house show, it was kinda sucky, the sound was so bad, but afterwards we played a soccer game on the house yard. We also went like twice to the local mall since one of the kids over there worked there and we hung out some time on the store he worked at, which was a tattoo shop and also a goth wear shop kind of thing, kind of weird too. After all this we took the 18 hour bus trip back home, but at least for me it was all worth while. We made nice friends, and it was a great experience that just something like hardcore can give to you.

Sangre Joven also toured Mexico twice. The first one was done in December 2003, and the tour was called Hardcore Sin Fronteras (No Frontiers Hardcore). We did these tour along with our brotherly bands Eterna Conviccion (a youth crew straight edge band) and Nota Suicida (which played a more new school kind of hardcore). We toured with the local Mexican punk band KLH, which were some awesome guys and they made fucking fun of everything and everyone. Along also came the guy who set up the tour for us (we all called him Pollo, amazing guy, he was so fucking nice to all of us, and he offered us his home to sleep and fed us like if we were fucking kings or something), his girlfriend, Valmiki Das of Decision Personal Records (also his wife and his small son came with us), and two other guys who were kind of roadies. In this tour we went all over Mexico, from Distrito Federal (D.F.) all the way to Tijuana. There´s lots of memories from this tour. Most of us made a 21 hour bus trip all the way to D. F., and we had to make a transfer in Tapachula (which is a town that is about half hour away from the Guatemala/Mexico border). Before we got to this town we had to come off the bus to check at the border, which is actually hell, it´s so fucking hot there, it totally sucked, but since we were many of us coming together it was a lot more bearable. We had to take our instruments with us of course. After the neverending trip we finally got to Distrito Federal. Some of us slept on the rehearsing room which was kind of far away from the guy who carried us around everywhere and took care of us. Since the city is so damn big we had to take public transportation and the train (“El Metro”) to get to places. We visited the Zocalo (the central plaza of Distrito Federal) and the central zone of it. This was a whole new experience to say the least. These Krishna guys owned a restaurant called Vrinda, and fuck it was great food, and it was kind of cheap. The first show we played at D.F. was at a very singular place in the city called “El Chopo”, which is like the mecca of latinamerican punk rock. It´s something you just don´t see anywhere, it´s so unusual to get to see places like this. Basically El Chopo consisted of sort of small spaces in the street where people sold records, videos, clothes, shoes, books and almost anything an underground scene could have. And it had stuff for any subculture, you could find a hardcore or punk record or shirt, but there was also metal and goth stuff for example. We were amazed, it was not like anything we have seen before. The show was cool and kind of weird since it was in a total open space and lots of punk and crust kids stopped by, and also some scary people as well, so at times it felt a bit intimidating and we had a feeling of being judged or made fun of, but overall the experience was awesome, I mean playing in such a recognized place in one of the biggest cities in the world makes you feel lucky as shit. We got to this place in a rented or borrowed public bus, since we had to carry all our instruments. This was in the afternoon, and at night we played a second show at some bar in the city, and it was pretty cool. I just remember that at this show a drunk guy was approaching and hugging everyone, and of course we all made fun of him.

It was time to leave the city for a while. We went to Toluca and played in this kind of warehouse. The scene there was crusty as shit, but the food we ate was great. There was this weird band that played there which was actually a two piece. A guy from another band gave us some tapes but to be honest I didn´t liked the band at all, I guess none of us did. We got back to the D.F. and the next day headed off to Guadalajara. The show there was a good one, I remember lots of people showed up, most of them were mostly into metalcore and the new school stuff, but they supported us and that was great. Then we played a show at Mazatlan, which is basically a beach. We actually went to the beach before the show, did some bodyboarding and then headed back to the show, which kind of sucked because people just sat and didn´t even supported the local bands or us. We Guatemalan kids have to support ourselves because no one seemed to care, kind of a weird crowd they had in that place. A cool thing happened to me in Mazatlan because we were heading from the beach back to the place where the show was going to take place, and I found 200 pesos (about 20 US dollars or so) lying on the floor, and this money helped me out a lot because I didn´t had so much money to spend (later I used some of this money to buy the Eyeball “Talking Straight” CD at Monterrey, fuck yes!). We also played at Culiacan, ate a good pizza; the bad thing was that my bass was broken, can´t remember how it happened but one of the guys from KLH borrowed me his bass for the rest of the tour. Afterwards we headed to Hermosillo, and we spent a couple of days there. This show was great, I guess one of the best on the tour, people went crazy with the bands, they even lifted us up in the air while playing, it was so much fun. I guess Sangre Joven was interviewed by some guy from a local zine, but I´m not entirely sure about this. Then we went to Tijuana, and on the way we had to stop at this inmigration police station, they wanted to give us shit and the fuckers wanted some money, but we could pull it off and continue on our way. Tijuana is a very strange city, we passed along the US border, so creepy and sad, you could see lots of crosses symbolizing all the people who died or got killed trying to go past the border in an illegal way. This show really sucked, it was a total let down for everyone. There was this band from the US which sucked, the local band also sucked so bad, the show was shit, we should have never gone there, it was a total waste of time and money, and we didn´t have that much money to spend. The reason why Tijuana fucking sucked is that when we arrived we were told by the show organizers that it was so cool that we were there and that we came from so far away to play there, and we thought they were actually nice kids, but when we started playing no one was there, I mean it was only us Guatemalan kids and the Mexican kids who toured with us that were there, there was no one else, just some couple of local guys who didn´t really gave a fuck about us. Then we found out that these fuckers who booked the show, and some other local scenesters were downstairs drinking beer, so we said fuck it, picked up our stuff and got the fuck out of there. The only good thing is that Sangre Joven was interviewed for a zine. I´m pretty sure Tijuana has a nice scene, I just think we bumped with the wrong kids.

We also played in this town called Ciudad Obregon. Before the show we went to this girl´s house, who was actually the one who booked us on the show there. We played a football (soccer) game, being us Guatemalans versus the Mexicans, it was so much fun, can´t remember who won. The place we played at didn´t have any grass on it, it was so dusty, we ended up so dirty, and the girl I mentioned before was cool enough to let us take showers. We ate something and headed to the show. The place where the show took place was this space that was like a deposit for steel structures, and it was filled with crusty punks who were drinking what seemed to be home made booze and some of them were sniffing glue, totally intimidating and unclean scene, and we all wondered what the fuck we were doing there. We decided to play just to avoid a possible ass kicking. The drumset was so small, I guess it was designed for small kids to play, the sound was shit, the stage was so small you could barely fit. We didn´t even played with the original lineups, since some of my friends had bad colds, and we just played a couple songs and left. Afterwards we made fun of it all, but in the moment we felt so out of place and so endangered with the fucked up atmosphere that we decided to take off as soon as we could.

Then we went to Monterrey. It was great there. Too bad we couldn´t spend more time there. We were taken to this market were kids have hardcore stuff to sell. Then we went to eat something and later to the show. I remember there was an important football (soccer) match that day, so the local kids watched it and the show started when the match ended. The cool thing about Monterrey is that the scene was very much youth crew, old school hardcore bands played and we felt more like at home here. It was a great show. Everyone sang along. I remember the local band It´s Now played, it was a nice band. There´s a silly fact from this show: when Sangre Joven ended the set we were asked by some girls to sign the demos they had just bought, so we signed them. I remember I draw a heart right aside of my signature, it was something we laughed at afterwards. After the show there was a small house show, and some bands which weren´t booked on the first show played on this one. I remember a band played a Ten Yard Fight cover and I sang like crazy to it. Then we had to head back to D.F. in the middle of the chilly night.

We finally got back to D.F. after an eleven hour trip and played a last show there and that was it. It was time to come back home. Those were two unbelievable and unforgettable weeks. I am so grateful to have spent those days with my friends. We had to sleep on the big bus we rented for the tour, brush our teeth on the bathrooms of local malls or fast food places, take baths wherever we could, feel tired as shit, but it was all worth while.

The second tour in Mexico was done in December 2005. This time the tour lasted just about 5 or 6 days. Sangre Joven toured this time with our local brother bands Crucial and Venganza. Along came Distrito Federal´s bands Tiempo De Afrontar, Three Sixty P.M., and Stacy. Now the tour was named Youth Crew Tour, and there´s a big flyer of this tour which after all these years still hangs on my bedroom wall. This time the tour was organized by Valmiki Das of Decision Personal Records. This time the trip to Mexico was a bit different because everyone took an airplane to get there, but I had to take the killing 21 hour bus trip (because I had no money to pay for an airplane ticket) to Mexico D.F. all by myself and to make matters worse my CD player was fucked up so I had to role all the way with no music, kinda sucky, but in the end it was a big experience to go so far alone. I almost got off at the wrong bus station, but luckily someone helped me out and told me the right station in which I had to get off. I was picked up in the station and after a 30 minute drive through the city I met with all the Guatemalan kids, ate at the vegetarian place and then went to the hotel where everyone was staying for the night. I remember we almost tore the rooms apart, we fucked up the beds, went from one room to another yelling in the hallway, can´t understand how we weren´t kicked out, it was a lot of fun. After this the night came and we played the first show at the local Krishna temple which was called Prabhupada, and it had a space where the bands set up and played. It was a cool show, the place was packed and by the time some kids already knew Sangre Joven since we had been there a couple years ago. After the show we got up on the big bus which was rented for the tour, and started the long trip to Guadalajara.

We got to Guadalajara a bit before mid day, and we went to this apartment owned by the local kids, left our stuff there and went for a walk on the city. We ate something and afterwards we headed to the show, which was at some sort of bar/restaurant. I can´t remember much of that show, but there was one funny thing that happened. When Sangre Joven was playing some kids in the crowd lifted our singer Andrés up in the air and took him all the way outside of the place, nothing offensive, they were just goofing around, and we all made fun of it. I guess some of my friends kind of took a nap on the backstage. Then we just hung outside and it was time to hit the road again, because we had to be in Monterrey the next day.

The trip to Monterrey was kind of a long one. We finally got there, I guess it was sometime in the afternoon. We went to Mito´s house (singer of It´s Now), he gave us something to eat and let us all guatemalan kids take showers. Then we went to the show which took place in an open space at the back of this restaurant or something. It was a cool show that night, but again we couldn´t hang out that much time afterwards because the next day we had to be back at D.F, to play our last show.

So, we finally got to D.F. after a very long trip. The bus left us at this big mall, because the venue was actually inside of it. It was the typical mall with lots of stores and I remember it was big as shit. We actually walked all the way through it I guess. The venue was a very fancy bar and it had a big stage with blue fluorescent lights on it. The sound was great. It kind of sucked that we had to play fast because my friends had to take the plane back home that same day, and we didn´t have that much time. Only Guatemalan bands played that day because of the short time we had. During Crucial´s set the singer jumped up during a song and when he landed he broke the stage floor and opened up a hole on it, and half of his leg got stuck inside the fucking hole. He didn´t got hurt at all and we laughed it up that day and several years later we still made fun of it and laughed. Sometime later we found out that Valmiki and some of the Mexican kids who toured with us had to pay for the repair. Then everyone went to the airport and headed back home. As for me I stood on D.F. that night, and Valmiki and his wife were cool enough to let me sleep on their house and bought some pizza for dinner. The next day I started the long bus trip back home and the tour was over. It was a great experience. Thank you again straight edge hardcore.

11. If the band broke up, when did it happen (year, and if possible month) and why?

I don´t want to say that the band broke up, it just came to an end, and I guess it was the proper time for the band to call it quits. We gave it our all and it was best to come to an end when we still felt great about playing and when the things we stood for still meant everything to us. Plus the same of us kids who were in Sangre Joven where about to start another straight edge band called Rivalidad (Rivalry), with the same youth crew vein, but a bit different, a little more aggressive perhaps. The band came to an end around april 2006.

12. What was the last show the band played before breaking up? Any special memories?

The last show the band played was at an event called UG FEST (Under Ground Fest). This fest took place in two days in a row (Saturday and Sunday), April 8^th and 9^th 2006. There were lots of bands, some were great, some not so much, and some sucked, something quite normal when a lot of bands are booked on a show. The venue was actually a big parking lot. I played that show with Crucial, my other straight edge band at the time besides Sangre Joven, and our friends of Venganza also played. There were bands from El Salvador and Costa Rica as well.

So, Sangre Joven played the last show on Saturday April 8^th 2006. Fuck what a show that was, really memorable. Everyone was expecting us to play, I mean it was the last fucking show and many people knew the band and liked it a lot, even non edge kids were into the band, there was a lot of expectation, it was awesome. There were lots of kids, even a small fight broke up during Crucial´s set, but it ended as fast as it started, I guess no one was hurt, it was just some pushing over and that was it. I was nervous as shit, all of our friends were there and we couldn´t help thinking the band was ending. So finally we were up there in a very high stage, that maybe was the suckiest part of it all because we were kind of far away from the crowd, but that didn´t really matter because as soon as we started playing people went crazy. Since the stage was too high I guess there was no stage diving, it would have been suicidal. We were having so much fun. A little time after we started people started going up some stairs that led to the stage and all of a sudden there was a shitload of kids up in the stage singing along, there were so many kids we didn´t even had enough room to stand, but what the hell, it was fucking awesome. I remember we had to start over a couple of songs because we started couldn´t get to end of since it was so crazy up there and we were constantly bumped by the kids, but it didn´t matter, we could play the songs all over again if needed. This proves that hardcore can bring out so many emotions and make people a lot more happy than so many other things. Then the show was over, it was a great goodbye, one of the best shows I have ever played at in my life. Straight edge hardcore went to the top that day. Then it was time to shoot some photos, and then we hung around as we always did.

13. Did the band stay straight edge during the whole period of existence? If not, which was the period that the band was straight edge (year, month)?

The band was always straight edge, from day one until the end.

14. And what was the reason the band was no longer straight edge? Line-up changes or (one or some) members losing the edge?

15. Some other important facts about the band that should be included?
I remember sometime we were offered some kind of sponsor by a local skateboard shop, but it never happened.

Sangre Joven played a reunion show when The First Step came to play in Guatemala.

No se porque no había compartido este disco. Creo que la mayoría en Guate conocemos a esta gran banda youth crew de Xerez (Norte de África), mas que todo porque estuvieron aca y dieron un par de shows que por lo menos para mi fueron de los mejores en que he estado.

Este es el disco mas nuevo de TTF. Para mi esta increíble este disco, igual cada quien tendrá su opinion. Realmente vale la pena escuchar esta banda, hardcore a la vieja escuela como tiene que ser. Ojalá que se den una vuelta por aca otra vez.

Esta es una magistral compilación que sacó el gran y legendario Commitment Records. Si alguna banda esta en Commitment es porque tiene que ser escuchada, asi de simple.

Sin duda es de las mejores compilaciones que he escuchado. Acá estan muchas de las mejores bandas straight edge de Europa. Y lo interesante es que la mayoría de las canciones o todas solo están en esta compilación y no en los LPs o EPs o demos de las bandas.

Increíble compilación. Si les gusta el buen straight edge hardcore europeo tienen que escuchar esto. Para mi estaría sin ningún problema dentro del top 10 de compilaciones de todos los tiempos.

Que buena coincidencia hubo en el blog con Mindset, gran banda straight edge de Maryland. Al parecer esta banda conecta las mentes de los que nos gusta el buen hardcore. Hace poco me topé con este disco sacado por Upside Down Records. Es el set en vivo de Mindset en The Championship, donde tambien han tocado otras bandas hardcore. Esta bueno el disco, tocan un cover de Minor Threat. No hay duda de que el que busca encuentra.

Bueno, para complementar el de Time & Pressure que compartió Gato les dejo este disco. Ojala que Mindset siga sacando mas cosas.

YOUTH CREW COMPILATIONS

Hace poco me encontré por ahi unas compilaciones youth crew muy buenas, y como Gato hizo el post de la compilación de tributo a Chain Of Strength quería seguir en la misma vena de las comps.

La primera compilación es la International Youth Crew Hardcore Compilation que como pueden ver en la portada y en la contraportada fue hecha por tres sellos diferentes. De las bandas ni que hablar. Hay desde las que son de América, pasando por Europa y Asia. Si te gusta el buen youth crew no te puede faltar esta compilación. Vale la pena escucharla. No podría elegir a mi banda favorita de esta compilación, es casi imposible hacerlo, todas tienen algo especial. Solo basta con ver el set de bandas para saber que la compilación es genial.

Un año antes de la compilación anterior Upside Down Records sacó la Youth Crew 2009. Te cagás cuando vés las bandas que estan en esta compilación, simplemente magistral, de las mejores bandas straight edge que podés escuchar. Me alegró que incluyeran a Things We Say porque es de las mejores bandas youth crew que he escuchado, pero en general todas las bandas son increíbles, tampoco puedo escoger una que sea mi favorita, pero solo con que empiece con True Colors es más que suficiente para saber que te esperan grandes cosas.

Ojala les gusten las comps. El youth crew nunca va a morir!

VARSITY - Michigan Straight Edge

Varsity es una increible banda straight edge de Michigan. Su estilo es bastante característico, youth crew hasta los huesos, pero aún asi el sonido es bastante original. Estas son las bandas que me gustan, realmente Varsity es una de mis favoritas.

Su primer disco se llama, si no estoy mal, "Team Effort". Antes y después de algunas canciones hay audios de la película The Goonies. Solo tengo una copia en cassette que un buen amigo me grabó hace varios años. Este disco no lo he encontrado por ningun lado, creo que es una de esas joyas perdidas del hardcore o algo asi.

También sacaron un split LP con otra banda de Michigan llamada Bloodpact. Este disco lo sacó Plus Minus Records. Las letras hablan de straight edge y amistad. Incluso hay una canción que se llama Conquered By Love que habla de las relaciones superificiales y la falta de respeto que esto implica. Este split fue uno de los primeros discos que tuve y al poner la aguja en el lado de Varsity me convertí en un fanático instantáneo de la banda.

Además grabaron otro disco que se llama "Can´t Escape The Truth". Esta es otra de esas joyas del youth crew, una obra maestra, o al menos yo lo considero asi. Este disco lo iba a sacar Underestimated Records, pero al parecer ya no fue así. En uno de los tours con Fuerza X conocí al dueño de Underestimated y le pregunté sobre este disco y creo que me dijo que ya no lo iba a sacar, no recuerdo bien. Al menos le compré muy buenos discos, y además me regalo algunos 7" de No Justice y Supersleuth, yo me quedé con una copia de cada uno y regalé a los amigos los demás.

Varsity es una banda que deben escuchar. A aquellos que mueren por el youth crew como yo les va a gustar bastante. Les dejo las canciones del split con Bloodpact y el Can´t Escape The Truth. Si consigo el de Goonies Never Say Die lo posteo.

Acá les dejo el nuevo disco de Something Inside, una increible banda straight edge de Alemania. Este era otro disco que hace tiempo quería compartir pero por una u otra razón lo pude hacer hasta ahora.

Uno de los integrantes de esta banda anduvo por aca en Guate haciendole huevos a No Turning Back en el bajo.

Si esta banda no les gusta entonces estan muertos por dentro. Ya dejen de perder el tiempo escuchando la radio y musica pura mierda y escuchen esto para alegrar sus dias.

HANDS TIED - Through The Wreckage EP

Desde hace bastante tiempo quería compartirles lo nuevo de Hands Tied. Que de ahuevo que esta banda se haya reformado, por ahi andan tocando en varios shows. Sería increible poder verlos. Me imagino que ya algunos escucharon el ep, pero si no bajenlo.

Este ep solo tiene dos canciones, esta muy recomendable. Al parecer van a regrabar algunas canciones viejas y junto con estas dos y otras nuevas van a sacar un disco, o al menos eso es lo que yo se. Esta banda si que es crucial, basta con ver las X´s y las camisas que tienen. Además siempre he considerado a HT como una de las mejores bandas que he escuchado, lastima que no sacaron mas discos, pero a veces las buenas bandas son asi.

LITERATURA STRAIGHT EDGE

Hace algunos días estuve buscando algo que leer acerca del Straight Edge y me topé con este libro. Esta escrito por un straightedger que se llama Ross Haenfler, que si no estoy mal trabaja en la Universidad de Mississippi. El libro tiene como titulo "STRAIGHT EDGE: Hardcore Punk, Clean Living Youth and Social Change". Fue publicado en el año 2006.

He leído algunas páginas y me ha parecido bastante interesante. No puedo dar una opinión de que me pareció el libro hasta que termine de leerlo. Creo es bueno que leamos algo acerca de lo que es una vida para nosotros, nos puede ayudar a reflexionar y a analizar otros puntos de vista.

Hace algunos días les compartí una entrevista hecha a Youth Of Today. Ahora les dejo esta entrevista que le hicieron a Ray Cappo. Idolatrado por muchos, odiado por otros, no podemos negar que es una de las personas mas influyentes en el hardcore y el straight edge. Esta entrevista la hizo Tension Building, la verdad no se en que año, pero me pareció bastante interesante. SHOUT IT!

Tension Building Interview with Ray Cappo

First off, why did you decide to start Youth of Today?
It happened on a car trip to New Hampshire. Me and a guy from Violent Children, Warren, were driving up to New Hampshire to visit a friend of ours in college. I was graduating high school at the time, and my whole dream in a hardcore band was to preach Straight Edge, for the benefit of the world. It was the most righteous thing I could think of, it made the most sense. I just wanted to do something good with my life. I thought that life was stupid. Basically, I thought that the world was a lousy place with so many illusions and problems. So I wanted to preach Straight Edge, it seemed right, it seemed like a good cause. The scene was really lousy at the time. It was February 1985, and everyone, the whole hardcore scene, everything that I loved was turning metal. There was no such thing as Straight Edge anymore, I was Straight Edge and I was completely made fun of for being Straight Edge. The other gus in Violent Children, they were Staight Edge but they were really into metal and that whole scene. The whole scene was crossing over, Agnostic Front went metal and it broke about a million kids hearts. There was one band left that I saw, 7 Seconds, and they were getting a little softer but I still liked them.

So my dream was to establish the perfect hardcore band, one that was as hard as Negative Approach but had the message of 7 Seconds. So that was my dream in the band. I told this guy Warren how I desired to go on tour, and he said no, I don't want to, I don't want to go on tour. Basically, Violent Children never played outside of Connecticut, New York... the tri state area. I said why not, we're graduating high school let's go on tour, that would be my dream come true. He said, "No, I really just don't want to". So I said, "Alright then I quit the band, this is what I want to do". When I got back I was really fired up and I was thinking, I know Porcell will want to because I know Porcell's not into metal. He wants to start a Straight Edge band, he can't stand just living in the same stupid town his whole life. So what happened was as soon as I got back I called up Porcell and said, I got some good news and some bad news. The good news was Violent Children broke up, we're not in the band anymore.

The week before we had wrote that song "We Just Might" and the other singer of Violent Chlidren wouldn't sing it, he's like, I'm not going to sing that song, I think that it's violent, I think it's crazy, I said come on just sing it. Even the song "Youth of Today", that was a Violent Children song, he wouldn't sing "physically strong, morally straight", he thought it was corny. I said come on... Okay then I'll sing it.

So I told Porcell, "We're going to break up and we're going to start the new Straight Edge hardcore band, our dream band, I'm going to sing, your going to play guitar, and we're going to call it "Youth of Today". Its's going to be a completely generic band, and it's going to be a slap in the face to all these metal bands.

So Porcell says, Yeah that's a great idea, forget those guys... We're going to do "We Just Might" and "Youth of Today", so we just started. Porcell had this other band, a hardcore band called Younge Republicans, they were a pretty good band. The two other original members of YOT, Pesch and Graham, were from Younge Republicans. So I said, "We'll get Graham to play bass", he was straight, he hung out with us, so to make a long story short we got these other guys in the band and we started practicing.

I had this Honda scooter, I'd ride over to Porcell's house. It was like 40 minutes away and we'd practice everyday. We had these far out super Straight Edge songs, like that song "Straight Edge Revenge". Actually almost every song that we ever had we recorded except this one song "Polluted Mind". I can even remember the lyrics to it. The lyrics were... "Polluted Mind, Polluted Mind, Polluted Mind, Polluted mind of greed and hate, Polluted mind it's not too late, Polluted mind to be heading straight". It's probably on a couple very early live shows.

So anyway we started this band and right from the beginning this band was very successful. We were really bold and we challenge the crowd all the time and we'd make fun of the crowd and put down the crowd and we'd do this all over. A lot of people hated us right from the beginning which makes for a good start. We were really into the tough Straight Edge thing but at the same time we knew that was sort of stupid and we were into the let's be cool 7 Seconds type of Straight Edge too. We were sort of caught betwwen two worlds.

There was definitely a look, but this was actually the clothes we always wore anyway and we just had shaven heads, and hooded sweatshirts and high tops and rolled up jeans. That was just how we dressed but it turned out just because Porcell and I always wore that, that now that became the look...

So when you played were kids just like "Oh my God, this is it, this is my life...?"
Well what happened was we just started playing in certain towns... And with Violent Children we always wanted to get a brother band, a band to play around with... So anyway this one show at the Anthrax, these people in Connecticut would always give us a hard time for being Straight Edge. The Anthrax was like our home base club and people from the old scene would come, and we'd come and we'd always mix it up and have arguements with all these old school punks. We use to be such a minority but now we were getting some kids into it. Steve Ready (NY Wolfpack, song for YOT at the Oak Harbor show in '88) who's a devotee now, was one of the first Straight Edge kids in the whole rebirth of Straight Edge which started in Connecticut there. Dave Stein (Combined Effort Records) too, they would come down. They started a band called Albany Style. Then this band Crippled Youth played, they were basically like a punk rock band, they were all about 13 years old but we were really excited to hear them. Our drummers little sister said there were little punk kids who are into Jerry's Kids and SSD who were her age at school, about the seventh grade, we didn't believe her. Then they finally played at the Anthrax one day. They were all wearing Johnny Rotten shirts, Exploited shirts. Everyone at the Anthrax loved them, the old crowd and the new crowd.

Well they lived right near Porcell, so we became friends with these kids, we'd all go skating. We just started
hanging around with these guys, they would come to Connecticut and skate the ramp in my yard. We'd give them all these records to listen to, they were young kids who just wanted music to listen to. We'd give them all the good records and say, "You know Matt, you're getting so much because it took us years of buying the stupidest records, I wish someone had done this for me, so here is a stack of the greatest records". So to say the least like any younger kid admires an older kid these guys admired us and became like our younger brothers. Sure enough they dressed like us and shaved their heads. Well anyway this was the beginning of the Youth Crew, there were these guys from Crippled Youth, Albany Style and Youth Of Today and we'd play these shows, these Youth Crew shows, only Youth Crew bands. The whole club would be booing... Anywhere we would play we'd make sure that Crippled Youth would play with us. It was really exciting then, it was all really new and all this stuff was going down. We'd play mainly in Albany, Connecticut and Rhode Island. We had this new young scene. It was really prime because a lot of people wanted to be into hardcore but there was no hardcore left.

So..I was friends with 7 Seconds from "The Crew" tour, they came and played with Violent Children, So this time I wrote them and said we'd set up the shows with them. This is what happened, this is great! The guys from the Anthrax club knew that 7 Seconds were our favorite band, we said, "Look you have to put us on the 7 Seconds bill". At the last minute they told us we couldn't play. We were so mad because 7 Seconds had let us play with them, in Rhode Island and in Albany. We were so upset, this was our hometown and this was the Youth Crew band. We said, "You have to let us play", and they said, "Sorry, this other lousy band... they put some crazy band on the bill..." I was so upset. So anyway the first show was in Albany, it was out dream show, hanging out with Kevin. The next show was in Rochester, we didn't play, we drove to Connecticut and recorded the single, then we drove to Rhode Island and we played with them and Verbal Assault. The next show was in Connecticut, I was helping 7 Seconds move in and Steve Youth comes up and says, "You know, if you want, we could put out your record for you", he says, "They just started this record label 'Positive Force' and they're looking for some bands". I ran outside and I saw Pete from Verbal Assault and I said "Pete we're going to be on Positive Force..." Pete says, "Oh man, we want to be on Positive Force, this stinks, you guys get to be on Positive Force why can't we?". Something like that but not in a bad way, so Pete asks if they can be on Positive Force and they're like, "Sure you both can be". So we were so psyched but the only lousy thing was... I go up to Kevin and I say "we're so psyched that we're going to be on Positive Force but we just found out that the club isn't going to let us play tonight. They hate us here, they hate the Youth Crew. He's like here's what we'll do and he makes this plan, it was so exciting you know. 7 Seconds is about to go on, everyone is there, it's packed. We're standing right at the side of the stage... So this is Kevin's plan, he comes out and says we're 7 Seconds from Reno and this is a new song called Youth Crew. Then I come running out and say, "Hey, you can't play "Youth Crew", that's our song, and Kevin says, "Well, if you think you can play, then play it". Then he says, "I'm just kidding everybody this is Youth Of Today, the club wouldn't let them play but they're going to play a couple songs". All the Youth Crew kids are like, "Yeah!!" It was great, we had this great picture of Porcell playing and Kevin in the back screaming along. It was so exciting for us, we played "Youth Crew", "I Have Faith" and something else then Graham broke a bass string on Steve Youth's bass, it was all pretty cool, everyone singing along.

After that the whole band went off to college. Still though my whole dream was off being in this band and preaching Straight Edge. So we set up a tour for winter when we had our break. 7 Seconds invited us to fly out to the West Coast to go on tour with them. But, the whole time our drummer, Pesch, wasn't into it, he wasn't into Stright Edge, he just didn't like the whole thing. So at the last minute Pesch said he wasn't going ot play drums, we had a show in Albany, a show in New York and then we flew to California for New Years. So we're like, "What do you mean Pesch you're not going to do this, we have two days notice..." So I had to leave Connecticut to go and find Drew from Crippled Youth. I just trained him how to play the songs on drums, then Drew and I went up to Albany and Drew played for us in Albany and then we drove straight to New York and played there with Agnostic Front. It was Agnostic Front's return home show from their Cause For Alarm tour, and the thing was that they hadn't played out in so long and they had completely gone metal. It was so distinct this is not hardcore this is metal, and it blew everyones mind. We got up there and it was just straight preaching, you know about straight edge and and total hardcore. People were into it but they were a little taken back. Then we flew to Reno and did the same thing there, we played with Uniform Choice who were starting Straight Edge thing out there, and 7 Seconds. We played in San Franscisco and up in Sacramento. We met all these kids in Los Angles who were just primed, because they were getting into Uniform Choice.

Well the band went back, my girlfriend was the girl who ran Positive Force at the time, so I stayed out in Reno and lived with Kevin Seconds for a few months... Oh, we didn't have a drummer so you might wonder who played drums for us out there.

Who?
Kevin Seconds and Troy Mowatt split up the set. Isn't that weird, Kevin Seconds Played drums for us for a whole tour.

So when you got back to New York what was going on?
I got this letter from Tommy Carrol when I was in Reno, he was just starting this band called "Straight Ahead". Well he said "I'm really into you guys and I want to play drums for you". I told him I would meet him in New York. So I met him and I heard him play drums and I liked him, so he joined and then Craig Setari (Craig was also in Straight Ahead, he joined YOT on bass) joined and that was the new Youth Of Today.

So when I got to New York the scene was big! There were all these Straight Edge bands. Well actually, it was just that Underdog started, who were sort of in the Straight Edge vein, actually they were just a new hardcore band. So it was Underdog, Straight Ahead, and a band called "Geek Attack", and Crippled Youth were still around. So Todd Youth from Warzone, he was actually an old friend of mine from the old days of hardcore back when we were real young, but I hadn't seen him for years. So Porcell and I were living in New York then and we're hanging out down on the Lower East Side around the Pyramid Club and Todd Youth comes out, I hadn't seen him for about three years. He says "Ray what's up, when I was in reform school I got your single, I think it's great, It's awesome. You know I'm in Warzone now and we're all Straight Edge, Ray Beez is Straight Edge, we're all Straight Edge". Porcell and I are looking at each other rolling our eyes. These guys were, like Ray Beez, I knew him from the old days and he was really into Angel Dust and everything, so I'm like no way. Sure enough man, we got into the Pyramid Club and Ray Beez is in there with an X on his hand. He says, "I love you guys, your great. Warzone is Straight Edge now, we're going to play Straight Edge songs, we're going to play with you guys". So Porcell and I are really psyched now because there's another Straight Edge band and Warzone used to preach really heavy, they were really into Straight Edge, Todd Youth was like our Straight Edge buddy now.

Did you do anything besides band stuff?
We used to, actually we would all chip in and buy food together and distribute it to the homeless, this is how the song "Make A Change" came together. All the Straight Edge kids would go do that in Tompkins Square park.

Were Youth Of Today playing a lot?
I remember one show in particular, Slapshot had just started in Boston and at that time they were friends of ours. Crippled Youth started playing a lot, it was great. Crippled Youth would come over and stay at our apartment, there'd be tons of people, we'd have these big Youth Crew days at our apartment in New York and then we'd all go to the show, that's the CBGB matinee's. So one time we invited Slapshot to play a show. No one had heard Slapshot at that time and at Some Records, which was the local record store, they had only sold three Slapshot records and they had sold tons of Crippled Youth singles. So Crippled Youth were really popular at the time especially in New York, and Slapshot's first record was out but they weren't popular in New York. So the club had put Slapshot playing over Crippled Youth. So I go to Slapshot and said, "You know not many people have heard of you guys here. Crippled Youth should be playing above you guys, even though Crippled Youth are like a local band, they actually are a lot bigger than you guys here". Well they got really bummed out that I'd said that. I said "I know that they are only 13 but they're really popular here". So Slapshot put up such a big stink that they wanted to go on second, so we're like alright, whatever. So we all played and then we were getting paid and I found out that Slapshot had more money than Crippled Youth. I said wait a minute, no one even knew these guys, I'm going over to Slapshot and demand that Crippled Youth get more money, and I did. That's how they came to hate us, after that show they hated our guts. Before that we were good friends but after that they wrote that stuff on their album... "Thanks to YOT for ripping us off". They gave us the money, how did we rip them off?

So this is all happening, Tommy Carrol and Craig are in the band, so how did you get Richie on guitar?
Richie and I were friends. We used to always go out to the (Krishna) temple together. Richie and I became vegetarians at that time. This is the summer of 1986, Porcell and I weren't at this time as tight as we always had been. I just remember that I became even better friends with Richie and I wanted him to join the band, so he did. He was really into the Youth Crew thing.

So what happened to Tommy?
Tommy was cool, we got along with him, but he had a short fuse. We didn't realize this until we went on tour. We had a hard time touring together and he didn't like touring. He was just more into doing his thing back home. So it was hard because we always wanted to tour and he always wanted to stay at home. So when we were on tour he didn't like it and he would want to leave, immediately. So we were on tour, we had gone down south and we were heading back up north and what happened was Tommy didn't want to do it and he went back to New York. So we begged Drew to play drums. Drew came on tour with us and he played the whole Northeast with 7 Seconds, that was in 1986 the summer tour, that´s the picture from the YOT "Break Down The Walls" cover.

When we got back from the tour we wanted to record an album. I think that we recorded it sometime in October. We had met Pat from Wishingwell Records out in California, when we played with Uniform Choice. At that time they had just put out the Unity single and Uniform Choice shirts. We were really psyched, but it took so long that we got pretty bummed at them. You’re really getting the whole history.

Well when something moves you, you want to find out about it.
Yeah, you couldn't imagine the feeling. Every town there were more new kids. It was like a whole new scene. We were the only band that had the records out. Now we would play CBGB's and it would be packed, and it would all be Straight Edge kids. You couldn't even imagine it. Porcell and I just watched the scene come out of nowhere. It seemed at the time that we single handedly created this scene, Porcell and I. From our little dream from that day, that first day. We would laugh to ourselves, "Oh man look at all these kids". At the same time we had an even deeper idea of what we wanted. We wanted people to take it more to heart. We didn't want people just to follow us or to copy us or dress like us. We wanted them to take our ideas and make something new... It seemed like all these other bands were just rehashing our stuff. Not that we were super original.

After a while fanzines would form an opinion of us... Actually Bill Rubin from Half Off, at first he was the biggest Straight Edge clone of all of them. He had a Straight Edge fanzine, it was probably the first Straight Edge fanzine, called, "Think" fanzine. It was a super Straight Edge fanzine, it had drawings of guys in hooded sweatshirts. He really got that whole image going. Then he got out of it and said, "All these people are jerks". The whole time he was pumping us up and he created that whole image of us, he'd draw these pictures of us with these YOT sweatshirts singing and screaming with shaven heads. Then he just turned and said, "Yeah this is all you guys are into and you're jerks". He was so into it and then he just turned against us. The whole Half Off thing was just a rebellion against YOT.

So what happened with Wishingwell, didn't you have some sort of falling out?
Not really, nothing major. They just never paid us for our records. They made sweat pants, they made a whole Easter bunny outfit. It was ridiculous, stuff that YOT would never wear. White sweat pants, white sweatshirts, well, Porcell would wear them. Stuff that I would never wear, I didn't like any of that at all.

What about the Together summer?
That was when all the bands were there. That's when the New York scene was just cooking.

Did everything just lead up to 1987 and then go down hill?
YOT came to the brink and just became really huge at one point in time, this happens with all bands actually. They get really big until everyone starts liking them and then when everyone likes them all the original people who liked them start hating them. That’s what happened. As soon as the YOT "Break Down The Walls" album came out we got fans all over the country, but we also lost all these original fans. So all these original people left Straight Edge, started drinking and saying, "Straight Edge is stupid", that's what happened, People would talk so much crap, people who had been our friends and it just got to the point where we were sick of it. We went on tour, "Break Down The Walls", then we went on another tour, we just flew out to California and played a couple times. That's when Mike Judge played drums for us and Craig was still playing bass. Craig was really into it and then he got out of it and now he just hates it. He was what you would call fanatical, actually Craig deep down knows that Straight Edge is better.

Why did Youth Of Today break up for a while?
This is December of 1987, we broke up. I can't really remember why we broke up. Just because we were really sick of it, I had written these new songs that they didn't like. The music was never used but the lyrics were used, that song "Live Free" is one of them. I was pretty bummed out. At the time I was pretty disillusioned by Straight Edge. There were all these copy bands. Originally I wanted to do something good, I just thought that it would be a good thing to do for the world. I thought that if everyone was Straight Edge it would be such a better place to live. I had this really sincere feeling, but then I realized that I had tried to do this and there were just millions of people who hated my guts. I was sort of distraught. That's what the song "Put It Aside" is about. So many people would come up and say, "You’re fake, you’re insincere". The big question became "Is Ray insincere?" Everyone just wanted to peg me for the loser. Deep down I knew what I wanted, but you know it's hard to do something that you know is right when everyone is telling you that you’re wrong. It hurts so much when you think that you’re trying to do the best thing and everyone hates you for it. I was just so miserable. So now I'm thinking, maybe I am insincere. Sincerity is a hard thing to say. So then I started saying, why am I doing this for the welfare of the world or do I just want to be a big star. Then I started to question myself, am I really against greed? Because now we're making all this money, we're making this money and I don't seem to be turning it away. Then I started questioning the other songs like "Honesty", am I really truthful with myself? "Free At Last", am I free? That's when everything started coming. I started questioning my whole philosophy. Basically just because people were coming down on me so hard. So then I decided that I just can't do this anymore. I just quit the band, I just walked out of practice one day. I just said "I can't do this", so I left.

So how long were Youth Of Today broken up for?
The month of December, 1987. Then I realized that what we were doing actually was good. It did make sense and we did have some good things to say. Actually, even though a lot of people hated us for it, a lot of people hate good people who say good things. So then we got in this whole mood again. I called up Porcell, "Porcell, we're going to start the band back up, we're going to put out a new album, we're going on tour". That's when “We're not in this Alone” came out.

How did you get hooked up with Caroline?
Caroline was distirbuting the stuff on Schism and they were distributing some of the stuff on Revelation also, so we were friends with them. They told us if we ever want to do another record that they'd like to put it out. It was pretty good because we had no money and we wanted to tour, so we just did it. Then we were getting to be known as a bigger band. Then Richie left and rejoined Underdog. Then Sammy started getting really good on the drums, so we took him from Side By Side. That’s when all these bands were starting. We watched all of them start. I remember this one show it was YOT, Warzone, Side By Side, and Gorilla Biscuits. It was GB's and Side By Side's first show. There was this other band that played called "Altercation", they were a great band from New York. The guys from Warzone were in that band. If you can ever find their demo get it. It's one of the best.

Why don't you tell me about the "Shutdown" show.

That was a great show, actually if you went to that show you would have realized that it was the best show of all time. It was like GB's second show. Actually if you want to know the truth Side By Side propagated all that stuff to get the club closed down. They got on stage and said "Everyone start stage diving". Jules had a real big mouth, so he was just telling everyone to start stage diving. This was because CBGB's, started saying "No stage diving". So of course Porcell and I, whenever we played CBGB's and they would say don't stage dive, so Porcell and I would always stage dive. They couldn't kick us out because we were the only headlining band. We would be the only ones who would stage dive. CBGB's was the perfect club for everything and I'd been going there since I was 16, I'd seen all these great bands there. So anyway, we started just mild stage diving for GB and Side By Side. The bouncers would get up and say "Look there's no stage diving". Finally they put these two big moose guys on stage. I just said "Look, these guys aren't with us. If you want them off the stage then just take them off. I just want you to know that they are not welcome here." Then we just started playing and the stage was mauled. I remember throwing the drums in the crowd. It was one of those hectic shows where there are so many people on the stage we couldn't even move. That was the problem with YOT, it just got to the point where people wouldn't just stage dive, they'd get on stage and there would be a million kids on stage. They caught onto Porcell and my tricks. You see, Porcell and I whenever we wanted to stage dive we would stay right on the stage to sing along and then jump off. So now everyone started to. They would just sit on the stage, come up and sing along and then go back to their seat on the stage. So basically what happened at that show was that kids just went crazy and they blamed it on me. So CBGB's had no more shows. Underdog was supposed to play CBGB's the next week and the guy from Underdog, Russ, who had always hated Straight Edge, wanted to fight me because I got CBGB's closed down. But I didn't, but he took it all out on me. Everyone took it all out on me. I was the scapegoat for everything. Either people really like me or they hate me and want me dead.

Is there anything else you want to talk about?
I'll tell you about one of the best shows we ever played. It was at Fender's in Los Angeles with Blast! and the Exploited. We heard that we could get on this bill. We were in Texas and we had called LA and asked if there were any shows we could get on. The guy says "Yeah, we're having a show the day after tomorrow, if you can make it you can play, but we can't pay you anything. We drove half way across the country to play this show. So we get up there and they had put this gigantic barrier up, well this place never had a barrier. They put all these bouncers in there between the barrier and the stage. People would try to get over the barrier and they would catch them and pound on them and then throw them back, it was just awful. So of course we had to start the set with "Break Down The Walls". I said "This is dedicated to this barrier, tear this thing down", then I do this running dive over the barrier out into the crowd. People are going crazy, ripping this thing down. That was great, Blast! were really into it. So then I get thrown back on stage and the bouncers grab me and start beating me up, they thought that I was just some kid stage diving, but I was the singer trying to get back on stage. Well fortunately our roadie (this guy RJ, from New Jersey, he's the kind of guy you need around for protection) grabs a microphone and slugged one of the bouncers. He ran up to the guy and smacked him over the head with the microphone.

"'Wake Up And Live' is about living life 'deliberately'. It's about never wasting any time in your life because of the vast amount of shit we can do. It's not about sitting home all day watching TV, but rather going out and 'doing'. There are so many things I want to do in my life, I feel guilty when I sit home complacent."

So says Ray Cappo, the rubber-faced master of expression/singer of YOUTH OF TODAY, a band that hails from Connecticut. Or New York, depending on which band member you talk to, as a few come from each state. But where they're from isn't important; what's important is that YOUTH OF TODAY (formed when ex-VIOLENT CHILDREN Ray and guitarist John "Porcell" Porcelly got together with bassist Graham and drummer "Pence") don't "sit home complacent." In their 7 month existence, their explosive NY and early Boston-influenced "mosh" music and Ray's growled/sung unity lyrics have managed to win the hearts of a fairly large-sized following, as well as some critical praise. Along with the praise have come a few not so kind words from some of the "older elements" of the scene who seem a bit put off by YOT's Straight Edge attitude and age-exclusionary name. But YOUTH OF TODAY isn't about age, it's about the youth that's in the heart today, tomorrow, and the next day... I ran into these guys on a trip back east and was so impressed by their emotional and physical on-stage energy and eXhuberant, fun, full-of-hope attitude that I know you want to know more about them, so here goes bros.... MRR: Do you think it's important for you to be known as a "straight edge" band? Don't you think that sort of alienates some people?

Ray: Being straight edge is a label that we're proud of, but we don't want to scare anybody off from our music because of it. If people want to categorize us with other bands who think and live like we do, then fine. When straight edge starts becoming a label to separate people, then I won't be a part of it.

Porcell: Our band is about bringing people together, not separating them. We see straight edge as a choice that's left up to the individual, but what's important is that there is an alternative to all the bullshit pressure to drink and with kids becoming more and more aware, maybe they won't fall into that trap.

MRR: In your song "Just Might" you seem to advocate intervention as a means to stop fighting. When do you think violence is necessary? You don't seem like the fighting types.
Ray: Our song was written about a particular incident, but it's pretty much the way we'll always feel. It's not about belligerantly going out and beating up anyone with a beer in his hand; it's about not letting violent drunks start shit.

Porcell: Being drunk at a show and just hanging out enjoying the music is one thing, but when someone gets outta control and decides to go into the pit just to kick some ass, the line's gotta be drawn. It's just not fair to have one drunk ruin everyone else's fun and all we're saying is that a person is gonna have to realize that if he's looking for a fight, he might just get one.

Ray: I think 95% of the time most fighting can be avoided, but our song is about that other 5% and how we're not going to back down, especially if we're in the right. Man, by nature, is non-violent. No one likes fighting, but usually alcohol is sort of a catalyst. It's too bad. Passivity has its time, but not in the instance our song was written.

MRR: Do you tend to place more emphasis on your lyrics or music?
Porcell: I'd say we tend to emphasize the lyrics a little more because when it comes right down to it, the lyrics reflect what the band is about. Then again, without the music to back up the message, a band just won't cut it. We work hard on our music, trying different ideas, using creativity, but hey, a band can have the greatest music in the world but if the lyrics are meaningless they stand for nothing.

Ray: We definitely feel music is as important as the lyrics. That's a problem with he HC scene today, so many kids are getting turned on to these inane halfwit metal bands who don't have shit to say but play their instruments great and get great production on their records. Hardcore always meant more to me than that.

MRR: I've seen you talking to NY skins, so what are your feelings on the whole skin "movement" in NY?
Ray: We're friends with some of the older skins in the scene who we just know from going to shows and stuff. From my point of view, I'm in no position to say if the shit that goes on is right or wrong. I don't live with them
and I can't see all the shit that goes on living in the city. It's also hard to generalize. In fact, in this case it's impossible. Now, being a skin is a trend; kids changing their attitudes and appearances to be accepted. If being a skin unites skins and separates them from everyone else, then I think the whole idea is wrong. As far as AGNOSTIC FRONT goes, we've been friends with them for about 2 1/2 years and they were always cool to us. They help a lot of CT bands get shows at CB's and we always try to get them shows here. I mainly hate when people use AF as a scapegoat for all the problems in the scene.

Porcell: People don't realize that in every scene there's bound to be a few screwed up people, but in NY this sometimes gets exploited and the sad part is that a lot of great HC bands get overlooked in the process.

Ray: To sum it up, all people are different and not living in the same atmosphere with most of them gives us no right to come to conclusions about how they conduct their lives.

MRR: I know you guys are all fans of the old Boston bands. What did you think of the "end of hardcore" show there last year? Do you think there'll always be a place for HC?
Ray: I guess our band and Al (SSD) have 2 different ideas of what HC is all about. It's sad to see people's fire burn out because they're getting too old. In my eyes, HC is a feeling I could never see it "dying". It sucks to see all these people wishing the days of 1981 were back because HC today is great, strong and new. I see a great future and all these people just want to live in the past. They're just as bad as the people in my school wishing they were in the 60's during the time of Woodstock. Face the facts, today is here, so make the best of it. Anyway, saying something is dead is just a copout for someone who wants to back out of the scene.

MRR: Don't you think that bands have the right to grow and progress?
Porcell: Not only do they have the right to grow, but I think bands should constantly try to improve. Bands that turn their backs on what they stand for just to make money or obtain more listeners are a different story. Instead of playing to an audience, these so-called HC bands are just out to impress people and I don't call that progression at all.

MRR: Give us the line on up-and-coming East Coast bands, if you would be so kind.
Porcell: A band I see becoming real popular is VERBAL ASSAULT from Rhode Island. Then, of course, there's one of my favorite bands, CRIPPLED YOUTH from right around my home town. They're just real cool kids who have a good attitude as well as playing great music. They've got plenty of time to develop though since they're only 14 years old. But man, there's so many up-and-coming bands like TF NUMSKULLS (NY) and FIT FOR ABUSE (Albany) that have so much potential. I definitely think some awesome material is gonna come out of the East Coast.

Ray: ABUSIVE ACTION are an intense thrash band from Poughkeepsie, NY.

MRR: Any plans for the future with YOUTH OF TODAY?
Porcell: As far as the band is concerned, I'm really looking forward to a successful tour this winter and would like to record a 12" by summer and start touring again. Basically, I just want to take the band as far as possible and reach kids who are willing to listen to what we have to say. Personally, I hope to be getting more involved in Futile Effort from Albany who are a crucial bunch of really dedicated kids that put on shows, do fanzines, etc., and who are currently working on a straight edge comp that is looking great.

Se trata nada mas y nada menos que de Right Idea, una increíble banda straight edge de Cleveland, que creo que ya conocemos los que nos apasiona esto del youth crew. Y si alguien no ha escuchado esta banda ni siquiera duden en enriquecer sus oidos.

Este disco es prácticamente una discografía de la banda porque incluye el Our World de React! Records, y el demo 7" y el Right Way 7" (este último lo más nuevo si no estoy mal) que los sacó Refuse Records. Además se pueden deleitar con covers de Iron Age, SSD, Straight Ahead y Youth Of Today. Mención Honorífica: OVER THE LINE - The Demo

Mención honorífica y un standing ovation para esta increíble banda. Este es uno de mis discos preferidos. Lo escuché por primera vez hace muchos años y todavia patea culos por doquier. Siempre que lo escucho recuerdo mis primeros años siendo straight edge y mis primeros años escuchando hardcore.

Personalmente considero a este disco como una obra de arte, talvez algunos no piensen igual pero me importa poco. Todo es perfecto de este demo, hay velocidad, una voz increible, buenos riffs, letras positivas y por sobre todo un disco straight edge, o sea hardcore en tu puta cara! Por ahi una de las letras dice que algo asi: "Solo porque escogi caminar una linea recta, no significa que voy a dejar atrás a amigos con diferentes ideas".

Lastimosamente esta obra maestra del año 1997 fue lo unico que saco la banda. Por ahi leí en Double Cross que la banda se hizo de nuevo con el mismo nombre, pero ya no con el mismo sonido segun dicen los propios integrantes, que pena! Y ya no eran straightedge, lo cual no tiene absolutamente nada de malo, pero realmente creo que su musica no es lo mismo que fue en el 97, aunque no he escuchado lo nuevo, porque realmente no me interesa.

Si este disco no les gusta, entonces no les gusta nada! Ojala que lo aprecien tanto como yo. Aunque sea lo unico que grabaron, vale la pena, es como que hayan grabado un monton de discos increibles.

TRUE COLORS - Consider it done

Que puedo decir de True Colors, una de las mejores bandas de los ultimos años. El vocalista cantaba en Building, otra gran banda de Bélgica. Creo que la mayoria ya tienen este disco, pero si no lo tienen bajenlo sin pensar. Es el ultimo que sacaron, lastimosamente ya no van a tocar, pero ni modo, es como dice Insted "las cosas buenas nunca duran".

Este post es para el dueño del blog, Gato, que estaba llorando porque no lo tenia, igual talvez ya lo consiguió. De todos modos ahi lo dejo para cualquiera que lo quiera y no lo tenga todavia.

Identify es una banda straight edge de Alemania. Este país siempre tiene buenas bandas que ofrecer, y esta es una de ellas. Este es el demo que sacaron en el 2007, la verdad no he encontrado nada mas. Identify toca un youth crew muy bueno, como debe ser, al mas fiel estilo europeo. La ultima canción es un cover de In My Eyes, lo que significa que estos serotes si sabian lo que era el buen hardcore.

Ojala que les guste esta mierda, se lo recomiendo un vergo a cualquiera que todavia le gusta el buen youth crew.

Aca les dejo el demo de esta banda de Argentina. Estuve buscando musica de Cuenta Conmigo y por suerte y de casualidad encontré algo. La banda se formo en el 2005, pero ya no tocan mas.

Si tuviera que decir que se parecen a alguna banda diría que talvez esta en el estilo de Los Verdaderos o algo asi. Igual pela, ustedes juzguen por si mismos. Personalmente me encantó el demo, buen youth crew straight edge, como a mi me gusta y como debe ser. La foto lo dice todo o no?

Los que ya hayan escuchado esta banda de ahuevo; los que no, bajen esta mierda porque es altamente recomendable.

EL PRIMER FANZINE DE GUATEMALA (POR : xCOQUEx)

Siempre se escucha decir que los tiempos pasados fueron mejores, y talvez en muchos casos es cierto, especialmente si alguna situación marco tu vida de una forma importante, positiva y/o favorable. En esta ocasión no voy a hablar de la escena ni de alguna banda, talvez eso quede para otra ocasión. Esta vez, en cambio, voy a hacer una reseña de unas hojas de papel que llegaron a mis manos ya hace algun tiempo y que vale la pena compartir con todos a los que les interesa un poco de historia del hardcore punk en Guate.

Eran mis dias de colegio todavia, estaba en cuarto curso y todavia tenia que esperar un largo año y medio para librarme de la esclavitud que a veces me significaba ir todos los putos dias a estudiar y desperdiciar mi juventud, o al menos eso era lo que sentia en aquellos dias, no porque me fuera mal en los estudios sino porque llegue a un punto en el que me harte del ambiente colegial y las reglas, pero hice muy buenos amigos y estudiar me llevo a algo mejor sin duda, pero si reflexionamos el ir a estudiar todos los dias si te roba algo de vida o no?

Recuerdo tambien que en esos dias estaba en una clase donde mis amigos no estaban, si chingaba y todo con ellos pero en las clases me sentia solo, un año dificil sin duda para un pisado de 17 años. Un buen dia uno de mis mejores amigos me dijo que estaba haciendo una revista, y yo como un perfecto ignorante que apenas daba mis primeros pasos en el skateboarding y el punk no entendi que putas me quiso decir. Un dia estabamos en los pasillos y saco un par de fanzines de su casillero y cuando vi en la portada un skater, la palabra PUNKS y una imagen que decia “PROUD TO BE PUNK” la compré en ese mismo instante. Esta cosa fue hecha en 1996, hace 14 años, increible, ni yo lo creo. Ya en esa epoca yo empezaba a patinar con mis cuates y escuchaba algo de punk, pero nunca habia visto un fanzine, lo unico que medio habia ojeado eran algunas revistas de patinetas, pero nada mas. Lo que siempre me gusto del punk y el hardcore y el skateboarding es que era algo diferente, nadie sabia de eso, era algo unico, casi como un secreto, y a mi nunca me gusto la moda mierda por la que todos se vendian (y aún se venden). Un tiempo antes de eso recuerdo que hubo una moda de los zapatos Sperrys, el calzado mas horrible que yo habia visto, hubiera usado zapatos de payaso antes que ponerme esas porquerias, yo prefería usar mis tennis high top, y todo eso me llevo a siempre evitar ser una victima de la moda. Por eso compré la revista, y además ya me estaba juntando con mis cuates a tocar algo de punk, asi que creo que todo se junto perfectamente.

En fin, la revista se llamaba OI POLLOI, es la primer fanzine de Guate según lo que yo se, talvez esté esquivocado, pero es casi seguro que era la primera. Era un nombre raro para mi en aquellos años, de hecho creo que hay o hubo una banda que se llamaba asi, nunca la escuché. Arriba del titulo “oi polloi” (perdon por la baja calidad de las fotos jejeje) se lee: 80% PORQUERÍA, 10% MENTIRAS, 10% RECICLABLE. Mas punk imposible y ademas amigable con el medio ambiente! Y un detalle importante, me costo 1 quetzal, y no me recordaba de eso pero en la esquina izquierda de abajo quedo como calcado el precio. Al parecer esta cosa lo tenia todo, hasta arte de mujeres. En la portada aparece el skater Henry Sanchez, mi primera tabla fue, una Blind (creo?) de Henry Sanchez, excelente! El autor de la revista era Marco Diaz, un amigo como pocos (un saludo a Maco en Chicago si alguna vez llega a leer esto), y gracias a el conoci acerca del punk, el hardcore (el me paso un cassette con Minor Threat y Sick Of It All) y el skate. Casi se me escapa, en la portada, abajo y al centro esta el logo de Black Flag!

PORTADA

Es de resaltar que el fanzine estaba engrapado en las dos esquinas superiores, aparte de punk era 100% HVM (hacélo vos mismo, DIY). Bueno, después de la buena impresión que me dejo la portada del zine ya era hora de echar un ojo a la primera página, el Editorial, una buena introducción en donde incluso se invitaba a la critica, demostrando una mente abierta, y aparte al autor le pelaba tres mierdas como la hubieran conseguido o que hacían con ella después de verla. Obviamente yo la conservé bien guardada porque para mí si fue importante. (Al momento de escribir estas ultimas líneas estaba escuchando Antidote, que banda increíble!).

EDITORIAL

En el editorial arriba a la derecha aparecía un logo de Etnies y abajo dos fotos de bandas, a la izquierda una de los pioneros Ramones y a la derecha una de Voodoo Glow Skulls (todavía tengo el cassette de Baile de Los Locos jajaja). Las fotos no eran de gran calidad pero recordemos que era totalmente HVM y no es como que era tan fácil hacer algo así por primera vez.

Siguiente sección: Correo de Odio. Pero creo que era odio en el buen sentido de la palabra, realmente el ser un punk skater en aquellos días era algo incomprendido pero creo que en el circulo de amigos fuera y dentro del colegio nunca tuvimos tanto rechazo, pero ya empezábamos a aborrecer las modas y el sistema social, que se yo! Se escribieron un par de columnas que básicamente criticaban al periódico del colegio que se llamaba “Uncensored”, algo irónico y estúpido porque no permitían una real libertad de expresión. Igual ese periódico no duró más de medio año si no me equivoco. En la parte superior izquierda hay una foto de un disco de Rancid, una banda que en esa época escuchábamos, pero después se vendieron y tan rápido como la empecé a escuchar le perdi el interés. Y a la derecha una foto de la portada del disco de White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean de NOFX, que es una banda que escucho todavía, pero solo algunos discos, incluyendo el de la foto. Tiempo después NOFX iba a ser una banda muy escuchada por los punks/skaters.

CORREO DE ODIO

MAS CORREO DE ODIO

Luego del editorial en donde hacían mierda al periodicucho escolar estaba una de mis partes favoritas: Skateboarding. Por aquel tiempo como mencionaba yo empezaba a patinar y que mejor que apareciera esta sección para ilustrar a los novatos. Creo que aún no existía Jungle. Se menciona ahí que el skate empezaba y ya habían sido organizados 3 contests, creo que uno fue en una bodega enfrente del Géminis Mall en la Zona 10, que en ese entonces y aun ahora es un parqueo. Se menciona también a las primeras bandas punk integradas casi en totalidad por skaters, que luego obviamente perdieron interés en el punk, lo cual era de esperarse, pero ni modo. Estas bandas eran CFC (Crazy Fucking Cows), en donde yo tocaba bajo, no se porque putas teníamos ese nombre pero no sabíamos nada de nada jajajaja, igual después se convirtió en Bombardero; las otras eran Domestic Fool (empezaron mas o menos de ahuevo, pero rápido empezaron a apestar a mierda hasta que nadie los toleraba más) y Punks Against Preps (buena banda!). También como un año y medio o dos años después se dio un primer toque serio en un bar llamado Savoy (que ahora creo que ni existe), pero ya era Bombardero, Punks Against Preps, Si (asi se llamaba la banda) y no se quien mas.

Las fotos del truco son de Kris Markovich en donde enseña como hacer un ollie, talvez uno de los 2 o 3 trucos mas básicos del skate. Ahí dice que en México al ollie le decían “chapulín”. Bastante ilustrativo o no? A mí en aquellos momentos me pareció algo espectacular. Recuerdo que en los primeros años de Skate se formamos el Team PPS (por Pokinatcha Punk Skaters, escuchábamos bastante MXPX en aquella época), y en alguna ocasión algunos pintamos en la lija de las tablas la legendaria cara de Descendents como para identificarnos. Un saludo a los hermanos Archila que estaban en esas aventuras, aahhh y al Chato también. Puta Diego tenía como 12 años cuando lo conocí y ya salía a patinar con nosotros en las calles afuera de su casa.

SKATEBOARDING

Después de la pequeña clase de cómo hacer un ollie venia algo asi como una mezcla de imágenes de un par de skaters, una secuencia de un truco y un dibujo de una chava. En las fotos aparecían Sage Humphries, Tom Penny y en la secuencia Jaya Bonderov. Creo que nunca en mis años de skater pude hacer ninguno de los trucos que hacían estos pisados, pero me divertía y eso era más importante para mi.

Luego venía una nota sobre el vegetarianismo. Increíble que ya hace tanto tiempo alguien se haya interesado por esto. Yo me empecé a interesar por esto hace ya mucho, en el 2000 más o menos y muchos straight edge en la escena nos hicimos vegetarianos. Por mi parte fui vegetariano 6 años, lo deje por 2 años mas o menos y hace mas o menos 5 meses regrese al camino correcto sin crueldad. Aun así ya en 1996 se tenía la idea de una forma mejor de vivir, una forma más sana y ética. Que mas puedo decir del vegetarianismo, creo que el mundo sería mil veces mejor si la mayoría adoptara esta dieta, pero es difícil cambiar el pensamiento a veces retrógrado de la gente. Hacéte vegetariano y cambia el mundo!

VEGETARIANISMO

Después de la nota de vegetarianismo que era casi algo pionero en la escena punk y que hasta muchos años después fue adoptada y tomada en serio por muchos de nosotros en la escena, venía la sección de STRAIGHT EDGE. Si, había una pequeña nota acerca del straight edge. Aunque yo no fui straight edge hasta en el ´97, o sea unos meses después de que saliera Oi Polloi, es increíble pensar que llevo casi 13 años siendo straight edge y nunca he visto atrás. Es decir, algo que se publicó en un pedazo de papel hace tanto tiempo y que en ese entonces nadie entendía se convirtió en mi vida desde 1997. Sin duda una de mis partes favoritas de Oi Polloi es ésta. Me encanta como se hace mierda a los hippies, porque estando moteados, apestosos y borrachos no van a arreglar el mundo. Por ahí dice que los edge no vamos a las fiestas, y en parte me identifico con eso, odiaba las fiestas en aquellos años y aún las odio, pero me refiero a las fiestas pura verga donde hay música comercial y mierdas por el estilo o aquellas que son en discotecas, que hueva ir a esas mierdas, en general me aburren las fiestas, prefiero un show hardcore obviamente. Y bueno que mas puedo decir del straight edge, es mi vida y algo que me ha ayudado a crecer y vivir de una forma sana sin destruirme.

Creo que las fotos de esta sección están más o menos claras, asi que pueden leerlas si les interesa. Y esta muy bien enfocada la columna porque nunca habla de violencia, porque el straight edge no fue, no es y nunca será violencia. Crucialidad en el año ´96!!!!!!!!!!

STRAIGHT FUCKIN´ EDGE

Después venía una sección de dibujos de mujeres hechos por un amigo de la clase que se llamaba Juan José Zaror, estaba medio loco el pisado, pero tenia talento para dibujar. Hubiera preferido fotos de mujeres de verdad, pero no estaba mal darle la oportunidad al talento de alguien. Igual de eso se trataba Oi Polloi, de incluir diversidad.

Y bueno, como en todo buen fanzine punk o hardcore no podía faltar de ninguna manera la reseña de discos. Es importante algo así porque permite tener una idea de que discos hay por ahí y que tal están para así darse una idea de cómo son las bandas y si vale la pena escucharlas, aunque al final quien decide si alguna banda es buena es uno mismo, pero siempre ayuda alguna opinión creo yo. Es bueno recordar que en esa época las únicas bandas hardcore que yo había escuchado, y creo que la mayoría, eran Minor Threat y Sick Of It All, o sea no eran cualquier banda, eran bandas clásicas. Además yo ya había escuchado mencionar a Gorilla Biscuits pero no los había escuchado todavía, lastima! La mayoría de los que sabíamos de punk escuchábamos bandas como MXPX, Pennywise, NOFX, Guttermouth, Lagwagon, Descendents y otras que no recuerdo bien, pero de todas esas solo escucho algunos discos de NOFX, y bueno Descendents es de mis bandas favoritas desde los días del fanzine, simplemente increíble esa banda.

La primera reseña era del disco Pokinatcha de MXPX. Era un buen disco, y la banda era amada por la mayoría de skaters que después se interesaron más en el hip-hop y por lo tanto no se les vió mas en la joven escena punk, venderse empezó a ser casi una regla. Yo la verdad le perdí interés a esta banda después del tercer disco, creo que justo en el tercer disco cambiaron a un integrante o algo así y después empezaron a apestar. Ya no la escucho más.

Después estaba la reseña de un clásico del punk, una banda que me gusta bastante, Angry Samoans, pioneros del punk rock como dice la revista. El disco es The Unboxed Set, que es más o menos una discografía de la banda. Esta banda aún la escucho después de tanto tiempo y sigue siendo excelente para mí. Consigan el disco o bájenlo, o talvez lo posteó algún día.

También se daba un vistazo al Unknown Road de Pennywise, otra banda que fue admirada por todos. Este disco la verdad era bueno, era mas a lo hardcore punk. Se aconsejaba comprarlo ya. Este disco lo mandé a pedir en Tower Records que quedaba en el centro comercial en donde estaban los cines Las Américas, se tardó un poco en venir pero cuando lo fui a traer y lo tuve ya en mis manos me emocioné bastante. Ya no escucho Pennywise, no se porque. Aún tengo por ahí el cassette original de otro disco que se llama About Time. Esta fue una de las bandas mas escuchadas por los skatepunks de aquellos días. Recuerdo que el bajista se murió (Jason Mathew Thirsk se llamaba si no estoy mal) y en un disco le dedicaron la canción de Bro Hymn e incluso la adecuaron para honrar su memoria, un buen detalle por parte de la banda. A la versión original de la canción le hicieron cover muchas bandas en Guate hasta que la quemaron y la hicieron en cierta forma intolerable, fue demasiado!

Luego se mencionaba un disco que creo que nunca escuché. Era Muchacho Vivo de Blenderhead. Creo que lo único que escuche de esta banda fue un disco anterior a este que recuerdo que no era malo, era bastante punk. Pero como dice en el zine este disco de Muchacho Vivo ya no era punk, y además dice que no es recomendable para los que les gusta el hardcore, asi que por eso creo que ni siquiera me tomé la molestia de escucharlo. Cuando las bandas progresan no siempre es bueno, o casi nunca, o nunca.

Y por último estaba el disco Hoss de Lagwagon. Aún tengo el cassette original, no recuerdo como lo conseguí, pero todavía vive. Todavía lo escucho y es lo único que he oído de esta banda. El disco es bueno, me gusta mucho. Tienen influencia de NOFX tal y como lo menciona la revista. Creo que ya no escuche mas de Lagwagon porque ya empezaba a tirarme mas por el hardcore y por otras bandas punk no de Epitaph.

De hecho iba a haber una próxima Oi Polloi, pero por razones que desconozco nunca vió la luz. No recuerdo si hice algún aporte para ese potencial segundo numero, pero lastimosamente nunca se hizo. Esa próxima edición se anunciaba en algo así como un volante inserto en Oi Polloi.
Como mencionaba es una lastima que nunca haya salido la segunda edición porque se veía bastante buena. Venía el kickflip y la historia del hardcore punk y más música.

Y así terminaba el primer fanzine de Guatemala. Pero tan rápido como empezó se terminó. Muchas cosas cambiaron después de eso, vinieron nuevos tiempos, nuevas bandas, mucha gente se fue y vino, y como siempre solo quedamos algunos o casi ninguno. Después de algunos años mis amigos de esos primeros días tomaron direcciones distintas y quedé casi solo, hasta que encontré gente con los mismos intereses, y bueno lo demás es historia.

Este post va especialmente dedicado al autor de Oi Polloi, alguien que considero como un hermano, Marco Antonio Díaz Vargas. Si no fuera por este pisado no hubiera nunca conocido el punk ni el hardcore ni el skate y nunca hubiera conocido el straight edge y mi vida hubiera sido una farsa. Gracias a él también pude tener mis primeros viniles como el de “Marinus” de Seein´ Red, y mas importante aún la discografía de los reyes Wide Awake y la joya de “Hardcore Pride” de Ten Yard Fight.

Ojala que les haya gustado el post. Si consigo alguien que tenga escáner, trataré de escanear el fanzine para que lo bajen y le puedan dar una ojeada porque las fotos no están muy buenas que digamos pero hice mi mejor esfuerzo.

Antes que nada quiero agradecer a Gato por la bienvenida y por darme la oportunidad de colaborar con el blog, y además felicitarlo por los buenos posts que ha hecho, desde la musica hasta las entrevistas y todo lo demás.

Tengo que decir que Gato es un gran amigo, también de los mas cercanos y de los mejores que se pueden tener, straight edge de corazón, entusiasta en la escena porque además de estar en bandas ha hecho fanzines y organizado toques con bandas locales y extranjeras. Llevamos muchos años de ser cuates y hemos compartido un montón de musica (me acuerdo que le regalé un disco de No Justice después del segundo tour de Fuerza X) y hasta tours a México y Sivar, además de compartir un buen tiempo en Eterna Convicción. Asi que gracias al Gato de nuevo!

Y si es cierto no puedo salir de mi casa sin escuchar Wide Awake y NFAA, pero tampoco sin escuchar Eyeball y Sportswear jejeje!

Estoy trabajando en una reseña de un fanzine, lo estaré posteando dentro de poco, ojala les llame la atención. Y por ahi voy subir un poco de hardcore de vez en cuando.

UNA OPINION SOBRE LA ESCENA HARDCORE/PUNK DE GUATE

Queria poner estas frases de Judge al principio porque esta banda dice tantas cosas tan ciertas que te deja sin palabras, y de hecho podría solo escribir esas tres líneas y decir mil cosas con ellas, habría sido la opinión mas corta y con mas significado y contenido de cualquier fanzine del mundo.
Antes de empezar solo quiero decir que no tengo absolutamente nada en contra de nadie que este involucrado en la escena y/o llegue a los toques. Lo digo porque talvez algunas de las personas que lean esto se lo pueden tomar muy personal, y no debería ser asi, igual es solo una opinión, si están en contra lo entiendo, no hay vergueo, y si piensan que lo que escribo es la verdad pues que bueno. Los que me conocen saben como soy, no me gusta armar vergueos, prefiero a veces no decir si algo esta mal pero esta vez ya no me puedo quedar callado mas, tenia que decir lo que siento y lo que veo que pasa en la escena, no desde hace unas semanas si no ya desde hace meses, muchos para mi gusto.
He visto mucho en la escena de Guate. Excelentes bandas, buenas bandas, malas bandas, pésimas bandas, bandas que se la quieren llevar de saber que putas, y muchas mas, sin faltar la típica que los mierdas solo llegan, tocan y se van (o sea les pela la verga, o sea rockstars). Y gente no digamos, los mejores y mas sinceros amigos los he hecho en la escena y por suerte algunos todavía están (otros los veo de vez en nunca y otros no se que fue de ellos) y otros los he ido conociendo con el tiempo pero no por eso significan menos para mi; pero nunca puede faltar la gente egoísta, la gente que solo llega a los toques a chupar o a drogarse y les pela la verga quien toca o el mensaje que uno u otro trata de transmitir con su música, la gente envidiosa y por supuesto los que se quieren creer reyes de la escena y ni siquiera saben de que putas se trata.
Extraño la escena de antes, una escena donde había mas sinceridad, donde había gente mas dedicada que sabia que significaba el hardcore, talvez sin tener una gran colección de discos y un monton de camisas de bandas, pero había algo mas que eso, algo no material, existía un IDEAL, y algo por que luchar. Creo que hasta en una época muchos en Centroamérica tenían a la escena hardcore de Guate como referencia, talvez no por ser la mejor escena, pero porque era la más dedicada y tenía buenas bandas, ahora ya no es asi, la escena no es ni la sombra de lo que era hace unos años.
Para mi el hardcore es lo primero, es lo que me hace feliz, lo que me hace olvidarme de los problemas, lo que me ha llevado a lugares en el mundo en los que nunca pensé estar. Es algo que me ha permitido conocer excelentes amigos, una música única, y si agrego el straight edge, el youth crew y el vegetarianismo, puta madre, puedo decir que el hardcore es mi vida, sin dudas. ¿Cómo puedo darle la espalda a esto, cuando me ha dado tanto? Sería lo más estúpido que podría hacer, y no pienso hacerlo. Parece que algunos no piensan igual.
Ahora el hardcore ya no es mas la prioridad en esta “escena”. ¿Porque? Es algo que me he estado preguntando desde hace mucho y no he encontrado respuestas. Y no es que este mal escuchar otra música, yo también escucho música no hardcore, por ejemplo Descendents que no es una banda hardcore. ¿Qué pasó entonces? ¿Les aburrió ya el hardcore? ¿Era solo un juego? Si es asi me apeno de esta “escena”. Si no fuera por las bandas hardcore que existen, y talvez un par mas, la escena para mi ya no existiría, estaría ahí, pero no sería algo que yo disfrutaría. Y es que lamentablemente ese ideal se perdió, ese espíritu que antes había se terminó.
En esta “escena” cada quien va por su lado, se nota mucho la división, parece que hay un muro de kilómetros de espesor entre la gente. Se que las envidias y los egos se sobrepusieron, ya hace un tiempo, al positivismo y la unidad. Ahora se prefieren mas las bandas “alternativas” o punk pero “no tan fuerte porque pueden chingarse mis oídos”, y esta bien, pero para todo eso se ha dejado de lado el hardcore, que fue lo que EMPEZO esta escena, lo que le dio vida a la escena. Y me da lastima ver como hay tantos que se han dejado llevar por la envidia, el egoísmo, el “soy mejor que vos”, la no unidad, los rumores y la música pura verga, no solo en el presente si no también en el pasado. Y lo peor es que somos tan pocos que estas mierdas afectan mucho, porque pueden influenciar a un buen numero. Por eso nunca me he dejado llevar, siempre me he mantenido firme y he buscado la mejor elección.
Y todas esas letras de muchas bandas hardcore en donde dicen que la escena esta en la mierda, que ya no hay unidad y que a todos les pela la verga son muy buenas, expresan muchas cosas, pero pensé que solo se aplicaban a sus escenas, que la cosa no podía llegar a ser asi en Guate, pero oh sorpresa, resultaron ser ciertas para esta escena también.
Siempre en la escena ha habido bajones, pocas bandas, poca gente, pocos toques y pocos lugares donde hacerlos, en fin, un chingo de mierdas, pero de una forma u otra esas rachas pasaban y la escena se levantaba. Pero esta escena la siento cada vez menos como algo propio, algo de lo que puedo estar orgulloso.
Y no con todo esto estoy diciendo que no haya gente que le gusta el hardcore, que le apasiona, que los mueve, que los motiva, claro que hay gente interesada aún, por suerte. Pero es difícil hacer un cambio porque a muchos ya les pelo la verga el hardcore. Algunos pensaran que soy un exagerado, pero es cierto, casi se puede tocar, esta ahí, claro como el agua, talvez tan claro y tan tangible que algunos no lo pueden ver o sentir, ¿o se harán las bestias?
Esta escena se esta hundiendo, háganse un favor y abran los ojos, ya esto no puede seguir asi. Talvez soy un nostálgico de mierda, pero algo que es tan importante para mi, aun después de tantos años, se esta muriendo, se esta acabando.
Por suerte hay bandas hardcore que están ahí todavía y un par mas que mantienen esto medio vivo, pero cada vez se pone peor. En uno de los toques de noviembre casi podía contar a la gente que apoyaba a las bandas con los dedos de la mano, que triste, en serio! Y para más chingar dejaron al organizador burlado, que pura mierda, los invitan a tocar y se van a la verga, esta bien, de seguro tenían algo mejor que hacer que escuchar bandas hardcore, ni modo, esta es la escena que tenemos.
Se que hay algunos mas que ya vieron la mierda en que estamos metidos, y gracias por mostrar su apoyo y por ABRIR LOS PUTOS OJOS, ustedes saben quienes son. Tengo más, mucho mas que quisiera decir, pero lo dejo ahí. Reflexionen, aun se puede cambiar esta “escena”, si es que se le puede seguir llamando asi, talvez si, por un par de semanas mas.
Gracias a Gato por dejarme escribir esto y a Venganza y Despertar por mantener el hardcore vivo, y a toda la mara straight edge y no straight edge que aun consideran al hardcore su prioridad número uno y algo más que solo música, ustedes saben bien quienes son. Y a los que el hardcore ya les aburrió……lo siento por ustedes!
Y para el final esto, aca se resume todo, algunas líneas que hacen más ruido que millones de voces y que expresan sin duda lo que siento. Si esto no te llega al corazón….puta mejor no digo nada más.

Hey there! Name is Diogo I’m the singer. The other guys are Rafael playing drums, Valter on bass, João and David on guitars.

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR INFLUENCES. CAPPO STYLE.. TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD WITH THE POSITIVE OUTLOOK THINKING, OR IAN MACKAYE STYLE, TRYING TO BE MORE INTROSPECTIVE AND DIY. WHAT DO YOU THINK PRESSURE HAS TO OFFER TO THE HC SCENE TODAY?
I don’t know, I certainly can relate with both styles, being positive and still introspective. And I totally relate with DIY thinking, specially on small bands, where we can still easily do most of the things ourselves. From promotion, to booking our shows, and having control over basically everything that goes on with the band. I don’t think I’d want to be in a band with contracts and people telling me what to do… I do this for fun, and I have a great time when I’m writing songs, recording the songs, working on the layout, playing shows. doing merch and all that comes with being in a band. If I had someone pushing me to play more shows, put out new records on a specific schedule this would stop being fun, it would turn into a job… That’s why we choose this name pressure – cause we’re sick and tired of all the pressure we feel out there. We want this band to work as our relax time, our own therapy. I don’t relate with the “saving the world part” I’m here to save myself and if I can inspire someone along the way with my example – great, and if I don’t, that’s fine too.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? VEG OR NOT VEG?
Well I’m the only one in the band not vegetarian, so my favorite food right now would probably be something Indian, chicken with those spicy sauces, they have great vegetarian dishes with potatoes and spinach too. Or Mexican burrito’s and stuff.. I love eating and trying different food!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST, INSTED OR CHAIN OF STRENGTH?
Chain of strength absolutely. One of the most intense bands ever, every song seems the most urgent thing in the world!

WHAT HAPPENED WITH FARO SXE? IS IT STILL COOL, I REMEMBER POINTING FINGER TIMES WERE REALLY SXE POSI AND COOL..
Straight Edge has never been big in Faro. The first sxe band was Pointing Finger started in 1999! And people from Faro didn’t use to like us, that’s why we were always playing in Lisbon or doing Eropean tours. There was a band called Get Lost after that and Broken Distance but always the same members you know?
Actually this new band Pressure has the four guys who used to be in Pointing Finger (me, David João and Rafael) so it’s a new band but when we’re playing live it’s like nothing changed from the Pointing Finger days. Faro is a small town (about 50,000 people) so it’s hard to find enough people into this kind of music, and the ones who like the music don’t know how to play instruments, and the few who know how to play music don’t commit to sacrificing their time to be in a band.. that’s why me and Rafael when we started this band ended up inviting our old friends, cause we didn’t have any other valid options. The other guys play in this amazing band called Broken Distance.

AND, WHAT HAPPEND WITH POINTING FINGER?
Pointing Finger was around for 8 years… we started it when I was 16, it ended when I was 24 years old. We did 5 full European tours, released 2 demo’s, 4 7”s and one full length.. we had labels releasing our music all over the world but we didn’t manage to tour South America, Usa or Asia cause we were all students and were always broke .. so after releasing our full length we got to a point where it seemed like we’ve reached everything that we’ve aimed as reasonable. That’s why we called it quits. We did one last tour and played our last show here in Faro. I experienced a lot of things thanks to that band, I learned a lot, met a lot of different and interesting people, visited about 15 European countries and it helped me grow a lot too.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PLAY SHOWS?
About once every 3 weeks or so.. it’s hard to find free time and we don’t want to play every week in our area.. We have a small tour planned for November through Europe with Broken Distance though.

Right now it’s probably Gone But Not Forgotten from Seattle. In Europe Broken Distance, and from the old school Gorilla Biscuits. More recent but still gone: In My Eyes and Carry On!

what do you do for living?
Diogo - I’m a lawyer, Rafael works in a resort, David in a pharmacy, João in the airport and Valter studies management. Working class oi!

Do you have any sxe or hc tattoos related?
Diogo - I don’t, I’m not into tattoos.. João and Valter have stuff in their legs like youth of today’s fists and judge’s hammers.. stuff like that, Rafael has straight edge written on his back.. I guess we all should do whatever we want with our bodies, and there are a lot of tattoos that looks great, but seeing kids getting into hardcore and doing two full sleeves and chest pieces in a matter of months makes me wonder… I mean I knpw people who tattooed VEGAN STRAIGHT EDGE on their backs and by the time the finished the tattoo they weren’t vegan nor straightedge anymore.

What do you think about hc and sxe have done for you in your personal life? school, work, etc
Diogo - It has taught me a lot!
It has helped me grow and thanks to hardcore and straight edge I think I’ve been living a much richer life, in the sense that I’ve experienced more things than I would if I had never been in contact with this sub culture. Specially the “do it yourself” ethics, have made me improve and learn about a lot of things, like music, editing, writing, recording, distributing, you know?
A band is almost like a small business, there’s a lot of stuff to take care and manage besides playing and writing music.
And at a small level we need to do eveything ourselves, most times as a team.
As I started working I realized how hardcore has shaped me into someone ready for the real world! There’s a lot of things you can’t learn from books. Thanks to hardcore I’m ready to talk in public, I’m not stage frighten like most people are, I can go to court and speak to the judge’s face without blinking ‘cause these past 10 years I’ve been singing in a band and facing a crowd of people who are looking at me and judging what I do and how I act.
Hardcore has taught me hard work, preseverance, honesty, opened my eyes to other countries and cultures.. It’s hard to imagine my life without this whole thing.

les dejo parte de la entrevista que estamos realizando con esta increible banda de chile hc...

BOT xq el cambio de rtbs a remission, obvio q cambio el estilo musical, se mantiene la idea, la cultura, las influencias

REMISSION: No es que haya cambiado Remains... si no que la banda murió el día que el guitarrista y co-fundador no quiso seguir tocando para concentrarse en su otra banda, Approach. Daniel y yo amamos la música y todo lo que comprende estar involucrado en la escena hardcore por lo tanto formamos Remission con dos amigos mas. Al principio la música era mas rápida pero eso fue cambiando ya que los cuatro escuchamos muchos estilos distintos y no queríamos encasillarnos en una linea como habíamos hecho en el pasado. "Escribir lo que vaya saliendo, ahí cachamos (vemos)". La cultura y las ideas permanecen igual con la excepción del straight edge. Algunos seguimos, otros no. Algunos son vegetarianos mientras que otros no. Tenemos ideales humanitarios, liberales y estamos contentos con nuestra escena hardcore. Algunas de nuestras influencias son One Step Ahead, Verbal Assault y Dag Nasty.

BOT: como es un típico show en santiago hc, el que usualmente remission toca? quien los arma, con que bandas suelen tocar, describan las bandas, luego una breve reseña del show, hr, cuanta gente va, q ambiente se vive, etc.

REMISSION: Es raro que te invite alguien quien no conozcas al menos de vista ya que la escena se mantiene cercana y no es muy grande. Suele ser siempre algún integrante de una banda amiga/conocida. Across The Line + En Mi Defensa (Redención recs), Against All My Fears, Tiempos De Honor y 562 organizan buenas tocatas. Solemos tocar casi siempre con las tres primeras bandas mencionadas. Un típico show es así mas o menos: Día Sábado o Domingo (en pocas ocasiones) el afiche indica que comienza a las 4 pero por impuntualidad típica de local o quizás porque hay poca gente al principio, comienzan 1 hora tarde. Suelen ser 6-7 bandas con las que el publico se va prendiendo a lo que avanza la tarde. Tocamos de los primeros, en el medio o al final, va variando siempre. A pesar de ya haber vendido varias copias de nuestro lp, no prendemos mucho a la gente. Algunos cantan, algunos cabecean, otros disfrutan tranquilamente y otros quizás lo estén odiando haha. No tenemos partes mosh ni partes muy rápidas. Somos tranquilos y nos complace estar ahí para tocar y compartir con típicos amigos, conversar, comerse una hamburguesa de soya con un jugo, etc.

BOT: cual es su perspectiva del hc latinoamericano en general.

REMISSION: Nuestra perspectiva por lo que vemos a través de myspace, de fotos o conversaciones es que en cada país hay y siempre habrá gente involucrada en el hardcore para que no sea algo que solo escuchas desde el computador o reproductor. Esto se vive en los recitales y se aprecia en ellos, en los discos, escritos y eventos que organiza la comunidad. Hay personas con mucha motivación que permiten que bandas de otras ciudades o veces hasta países que pasen por su ciudad a tocar y compartir. Rescato que ustedes en Guate tengan muchas bandas, amigos y han visto tocar a Soul Control, TFS, IA etc. Lo repito, la motivación es clave

como fun fact: pueden observar que el cantante esta usando una camisa del eterno enemigo, banda argentina que entrevistamos en BOT no.3, dicen por ahi que el cantante de outspoken visito argentina y al conocer la banda de inmediato se emociono y compro toda la merch posible ya que como saben el eterno enemigo para algunos es como una banda tributo a outspoken...

hola que tal,mi nombre es juan manuel y soy el vocalista en A MIS ESPALDAS

mi primer acercamiento en el hardcore se remonta a el año 1999 en la ciudad de buenos aires,de donde yo soy originario.en esos tiempos salia mucho a los recitales locales,recitales donde se juntaba lo que se podia entre las bandas y se hacian tocatas en los patios o dentro de la misma.en ese tiempo era como que el punk era muy masivo y casi todos los recitales eran del genero,pero siempre abia variaciones en las bandas que tocaban y por ay alguna que otra era heavy,ska o crust etc.....a todo eso ya abian pasado años de que LA BUENOS AIRES HARDCORE surgio en ARGENTINA y no era de esperar que algun cassette de DIFERENTES ACTITUDES JUVENILES,NO DEMUESTRA INTERES,EXISTENCIA DE ODIO,XAUTOCONTROLX o FUN PEOPLE(entre otras)lleguen a mi mano,ya que en ese tiempo mis salidas ya pasaban mas aya de salir a recitales barriales y cada vez me metia mas en lo que eran los show en otros lugares como en la capital de BUENOS AIRES.a raiz del hardcore se presenta y conosco el STRAIGHT EDGE,conociendo chicos que ya tenian el EDGE como forma de vida y tambien escuchando bandas pioneras.cada vez mas me fui interesando,ya que al hardcore lo veia positivo,esto llamado sxe era lo mas positivo que abia escuchado y era lo que buscaba,la lucha que implicaba el STRAIGHT EDGE era algo verdadero y real.abarcaba todo los ambitos sociales y todos los sentimientos y broncas que me generaba una sociedad cuya meta era el consumismo,la conformidad,la ignorancia,el descontento de las personas y el maltrato animal!!el hardcore y el straight edge abrieron mi mente y tambien los ojos a lo que realmente alguna vez estube ciego y es por eso que lo adopte como estilo de vida!!!

la banda se forma a consecuencia de las inquietudes y las ganas de decir las cosas que realmente nos molestaban o que realmente estaban consumiendo a una sociedad donde solo veiamos que se venia a bajo,pero dando siempre un mensaje positivo a las personas y tratando de transmitir lo que se esconde a simple vista o las cosas que te imponen innesesarias en tu vida,como por ejemplo las drogas,el alcohol,el consumo de animales etc.....bacicamente A MIS ESPALDAS es una banda positiva que solo busca transmitir y generar la reflexion,el cambio que ahi internamente en cada uno de nosotros y que cada persona saque lo mejor de si todos los dias y no dejarse engañar,no caer el las mentira de vida que manipulan y reinan en este mundo!!

el nombre A MIS ESPALDAS muchos los relacionan con traicion o engaño,pero el nombre a mis espaldas surge por las cosas que te esconden o que no las podes ver,cosas que pasan por detras tuyo,cosas que no estan al alcanse de tus ojos,cosas que a uno en la vida lo hacen vivir engañandose a uno mismo,llevando algo que realmente no te das cuenta o algo que realmente esconden para veneficio personal.se busco un nombre donde se abarque lo que no vemos a simple vista,lo que nos hacen a nuestras espaldas,donde nosotros no tenemos el alcanse de ver las cosas.

NO CIERRO MIS OJOS habla de lo que uno toma y adopta como estilo de vida,en el caso de este tema tiene la orientacion al VEG(etari)ANISMO pero tomado personalmente,de intentar cada dia y no perder la esperanza en esta lucha eterna como es la liberacion animal.tomarse esto como algo serio y no como una simple dieta,y que realmente no te importe lo que digan los demas,solamente seguir intentando en esta lucha y no cerrar los ojos ante tantas muertes e injusticias,tener el valor de enfrentar y no quedarse con los brazos cruzados,abrir el corazon y ver mas aya del plato de comida de cada dia,sentirse mejor y en paz por no ser complise de tan cruel realidad!!!

aun me emociono cuando descubro una banda youth crew mas...

Mi amigo dark se tomo la tarea de darnos a conocer esta genial banda de argentina sxe, en un país de donde han salido bandas tan geniales como vieja escuela, siempre verdadero (amo a esta banda) y el mismo reconcile que en la actualidad aun tocan. en una época donde la el hc latinoamericano en general carece de bandas sxe, aparece REMINDER con un hc directo, riffs básicos y letras de amistad y unidad exponen su propuesta.
1) nombres y posiciones de los integrantes?
santiago: voz, wally: guitarra, diegui: bateria, alvaro(yo): bajo.

2) Influencias que tiene Reminder?
el edge principalmente que es el estilo de vida que llevamos
despues bandas como carry on, stand and fight, youth of today, bane, champion.

3) Cuanto tiempo llevan tocando juntos?
llevamos poco menos de 1 año como banda

4) Como comenzo Reminder?
reminder comenzo tras la separacion de la banda que tenian wally y santiago, despues
de un tiempo sin tocar, deciden armar MORE THAN PROUD, que despues pasaria a ser REMINDER.

5) Algun percanse que haya marcado la banda?
la ida del primer batero fue dificil, ya que bateros no hay muchos y menos bateros sxe y rapidos haha.
pero al poco tiempo diegui ingreso en la banda, praticamente salvandola.

6) Que piensan acerca del Vegetarianismo, lo apoyan o le son indiferentes?
yo por mi parte soy sxe, pero no vegetariano, apoyo el estilo de vida, pero no lo llevo.
en cambio el resto de los chicos si llevan el estilo de vida vegetariano.

7) Algun consejo o algo que quieran agregar para la Gente de la Escena de Guatemala Hardcore?
no conozco mucho de la escena de alla, pero ojala que sigan saliendo bandas,
que se editen discos y se hagan fanzines como este, que mucha mas gente conozca esta gran movida.

espe subio un par de fotos viejas (años 00-01) donde aparece esta foto en el Faro(z10), show al cual no pude asistir o mas bien dicho llegue tarde, era un patojo de 16 años que no tenia transporte y como era usual dependia de mi primo (tavo, bajista de sangre joven) para movilizarme pero no se que paso ese día y tuve q llegar por mis propios medios, muchos de mis compañeros presentes dijeron que fue un show verdaderamente feo sin asistentes y la verdad me queda duda si fue el primer show de sangre joven o no. en fin, es talvez de los pocos shows en los que no los vi tocar.

esta segunda foto, es en el show de Tropiezo, banda puertoriqueña de hc politico, de las primeras bandas hc punk en tocar en gt, este show a mi parecer durante muchoooo tiempo fue el mejor show de gt hc, superado muchos años despues por el de TFS. se puede apreciar la alineacion original que sino estoy mal era: diego voz, tavo bajo, andres guitarra, nito guitarra y espe bateria. si todo concuerda este fue el segundo show de la banda.

la pagina de videos de hc de la escena gringa en general, hate5six video, subio un video en raw version (version cruda) del set que MINDSET tocó en this is hc fest (costa este hcfest). sin duda es de las bandas mas trascendentales de la epoca youth crew actual, demostrando que el oldschool straght edge no esta muerto en la costa este de los estados unidos y que junto con right idea (ohio hc) y get the most (nor-oeste) se han ganado parte de mi corazon. en primera fila se puede observar a steve (TFS) y a pequeño phill (ex mindset baterista) asi como a negrin keith (Alert) y otros. sin duda This Is Hc fest ya dejo atras la imagen de Macho (imbecil) hc fest que tubo en sus inicios y en lo personal hubiera preferido ir a este fest q a Sound and fury en cali. en fin, disfruten de esta banda. en el proximo post les dejare el link de descarga de su seven inch.
